New to 911s. A few questions!

Hi,

I am due to pick up my 1998 C2 in Ocean blue and grey leather. Full factory GT3 kit and only 20k miles on the clock.

Is there a general consensus around Insurance companies? Any suggestions to get the best deal? I am 32, my mrs is 25 both been driving since 17 with no convictions or claims and full no claims. Live in Surrey, Car garaged and 12k miles per annum.

Secondly, I have the standard exhaust but feel from my brief experience so far it is quite tame.. Anyone have experience of the sports exhaust? Is having it switchable useful or worth the money? Is the sports system quite intrusive after a while? Is there a second hand market for them or a non Porsche cheaper version?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I am sure there will be many more posts.. I can't wait until I pick it up on Weds!!!!

Cheers

Nick

Hi Nick

Welcome to the 996 forum.

Many debates on all the forums around insurance. As the car isn't yet considered a classic you will probably need to go with one of the more standard insurance companies. I personally insure all my cars through Privilege as they have always been the cheapest - however the quotes are always personalised to some degree or another. Try www.confused.com to get a good range of quotes with little or no effort - other than a one time input of your details.

I have a 996 cab so a sports exhaust is an absolute must - not so sure in a coupe. There is no 'real' performance gain however the sound is massively improved from the subdued note of the std exhaust. Go to any PCGB event and I am sure someone will let you listen to the difference. If you decide to go for it then switching isn't really an option on a retrofit as it costs a fortune in labour (5-8hrs depending on who you ask) for very little benefit.

I bought my PSE equivalent on ebay and had the local independent BMW dealer fit it for £50 cash on a Saturday morning. I have kept the old one in case I seel and the new owner wants it.

Enjoy the new car on Wednesday and treat her gently if the roads are vas icy as they have been today !!

Regarding the Insurance i recently bought a 996 and i shopped about being the same age as you, quotes for a garaged car came in around the £1000 mark standard car no mods and this was with the so called specialist insurance companies. I also then tried privilage insurance and saved aroung £400, try it online as you will save 10% and it is easy and you get a quote there and then but allow 5-10 min to do it. I noticed the quotes changed dailiy and it took 5 goes before i got a really good price. Adding on other drivers may be tricky especially if they are 25 but a clean licence should get you far.

Can't help on the sports system as mine is standard still has a great sounds.

Good Luck

Phil

Hi Nick

Well done - great colour too!

I renewed my insurance with Liverpool Victoria last month for £666. Protected bonus, unlimited miles, business use, courtesy car, legal protection etc, etc,. I am 20 years older than you, the car is garaged, SL6 postcode, with only a few points (not that it matters with L-V) and they didn't ask for extra security. I have found them very competitive, but there are others here that found them more expensive. My daughter has been with them for two years, since she started driving, and they were the cheapest, and best cover, by miles for her. She had two write-offs in the first year, and the service we got was exceptionally good. My brother insures his C4 with them - £200 cheaper than Direct Line with half the hassle.

You really have to shop around. I found confused.com a complete waste of time. The quotes they gave me were way over the top and they didn't cover all the insurance companies. I got cheaper online quotes by going direct to the same companies they were recommending!
