New to 944

Hi everyone, I've just bought my first 944 to use as a daily runner after selling the Integra Type R which my wife and I had owned from new. I'm not new to Porsches though as my son and I have around 15 or 16 (I've lost count) 924s between us, including two 1977 Martini Limited Editions and a 1988 924S Le Mans Limited Edition, but none on the road at present!

My 944 is a 1986 model in striking Garnet Red Metallic (LM3Y) with black pinstripe interior and has done only 116,800 miles which I'm fairly certain is genuine. I bought it on ebay from a chap in Torquay and drove it home to North Wales yesterday. The owner prior to the last one (who had only bought the car himself in January) had in the last three years that I know of pretty well only driven it to the MOT station and back as it's only done around 350 miles since it was MOT'd in August 2006. For all that it's obvious he (or she) doted on it as in that time it has been serviced properly, had a new heated windscreen, new Continental tyres all round and the teledials refurbished. At some time in the past it appears to have had maybe a bottom half respray but it was done well and is not at all obvious. In the last month or so it's also had the power steering pump and steering rack replaced but there still seems to be a problem with it as the steering feels unassisted at present so there's no hope of my wife driving it until that's rectified.

The drive back yesterday via the M5, M6 and M56 was very enjoyable and the car attracted a lot of attention. That is it was enjoyable until it got dark when I was near Shrewsbury which is when I discovered the instrument light wasn't working! So the last hour or so was a little worrying as I was unable to see either the water temperature or oil pressure in a car whose recent history was not entirely documented. As for judging my speed, it reminded me of the days when I judged the speed of my first E-type by the rev counter - unfortunately, this time I couldn't see the rev counter either!

In the last year I've only seen one other 944 in this area and for that matter only one 924 so if there are any within a 50 mile radius of where I live they must be well hidden. As I said above, mine is going to be my daily drive for the time being so this 944 will be seen along the North Wales coast and also two or three times a month in Manchester.

I hope to go to some Club meets, etc. and to meet up with other 944 (and 924) owners to swap stories, etc.

Hi Martin, you are very welcome! I often head up to Denbigh way via the old Mold road in my 944, so might see you around![:)]

I see from the 944 colours thread that there is no picture of a Garnet Red Metallic car which I will rectify as soon as I can.

Hi Nick, it's a nice road from Mold to Denbigh with lots of interesting curves and if you know where to look the occasional stretch to pass the slower traffic. Let me know if you're going to be in the Bodelwyddan area and we'll try and meet up.

Welcome. Mrs zcacogp and I do a Scripture Union camp each summer in Abersoch, on the Llyn Penninsula in North Wales. We usually travel from Bridgnorth to Shrewsbury where we pick up the A5, then across to Lake Bala and over the hills ... you have some simply superb roads there on which to enjoy a 944! Oli.

It is a great road, especially if you know it reasonably well![;)] I'll let you know if I head out that way. Enjoy your new car and let us have some pics as soon as poss![:)]

Its funny how people seem to come back to these cars: isnt it? I was heavily involved with FRs in the 1990s and I had sworn that I wouldnt buy another front engined Porsche. I held out for seven years, until a friend persuaded me to buy a Porsche for a charity rally that we were entered in. I still have the 944 along, now, with a very sound, but slightly shabby 924S. I am still determined not to spend more than £500 on a car though; and I certaintly wont be buying another Club Sport or 250.....

Hi Oli You're right there, that's why Top Gear amongst others are often up here. Martin
