new to 997 few questions

As posted earlier I'm new to the 997, loving the car so far but have a few questions: does anyone get on with their PCM? or does it take years of practice! The central two air vents have vertical movement but not lateral, whats broken, is it an easy fix.

Hello - and Welcome!

Okay - Depending on how your 997 was specified, this is a three-section answer, so bear with:
1 - The thing with PCM is to spend some time sitting in the car, setting it up how you'd like. Radio presets, Bass, Treble, etc.
2 - Nav, if specified, is a waste of time unless the prevous owner had it updated to the latest version. Don't ask how much it costs to update it if yours is the original software - just go any buy a TomTom and spend the rest on fuel
3 - Phone, If specified, can take an O2 or Vodafone SIM only. I use a PAYG SIM and just use it on occasion to call missus (Or, more usually, she calls me to ask when I'll be home)

Air vents - odd one this, as both move individually. Is the rotary dial set to 'Open' on both? I think they might not move properly if they're set to 'Closed' If they are broken I'd wager that it's not an easy fix, it'd be easiee to live with it than pull the dash to bits...however, others may have a more posisitve view.

Hope this helps.

Cheers STiG911, I thought the nav probably was a no goer although it got me home, was thinking PAYG Sim but hadn't realised the limited number of providers. Re the vents, its the directional control, will move flaps up and down but not side to side, funny its both, perhaps a heavy handed previous owner.

Hi Lancerlot, that link seems to take me to 'getting the best out of PCGB forum' is that right?

I totally agree with Clives comments on the PCM SAT NAV.... At first it seems very awkward and clunky to use but once you master the method of inputting your destination it works great and has the added benefit of a directional display arrow in the dash dials, which I find very good. You can update the map DVD and soft ware, it is readily available from a bit of googling. The PCM 2.1 received its last update in August 2015. I have updated both my Carrera and Cayenne which have the PCM 2.1 but the reality is that even this update is from 2013 map data at best.

However if you don't mind using a screen mount for your phone or TomTom unit then that's your choice and option.
I have tested my phone with a THREE network SIM and also French Orange and both worked.

I hadn't realised you are a visitor to the forum.
You have to be registered as a PCGB member in order to gain access to the "Members Only" forum sections that includes the Technical Index the link directs you to.

Re Clive's post above, you need to be a member to access the 997 technical section.
I have PCM 2.1 in the Cayenne and I use a PAYG sim card and divert my calls to that phone number when out and about. Very easy to set up divert and divert cancel on your mobile and only takes seconds.
The perennial problem with the earlier sat nav is the lack of full post code input and the input method!

PCM 2.1....... still getting to grips with setting it up properly! Anyone point me at how to change between CD's in the autochanger. Manual refers to CDC button but there isn't one, just the CD button. I know its probably me.

In CD mode, select the CD you need by turning the rotary knob - greyed out CD slots are empty. The selected CD will play after 1 second or press the rotary button for instant play.

Hi
I have a 997 gen 1.5 Turbo. I have been thinking about buying a 997 Carrera 2s also as they seem good value but they seem to have lots of engine problems. Should i look at something else?

Bearing in mind 997 is the most successful 911 Porsche has ever built and there plenty of them running around, stating they "have lots of engine problems" is somewhat overstating the situation.
If you're looking at a Gen 2 car, there should be no problem at all, providing you take all reasonable precautions as a prudent purchaser prior to closing a deal.
Regards,
Clive

I agree with Clive.

No engine problems / The 6 speed manual gearbox is a pleasure / enjoy
As long as the radio and CD player works with the already excellent B & O sound - better with the rear seats dropped - happy

Mines eleven years old so under advice use Mobil 5/40 as standard 0/40 - Got in the habit of oil and filter change every 6 months

The only issue with mine was the sports exhaust

Did not like it

Retained the original Porsche cats but had Supersprint manifolds, mufflers etc fitted.
No on and off button - calm round town - enjoyable burble at motorway speeds - fab when over 5,000 revs

At the end of a drive a 997 in any model is a car worth owning
