New to me 981 Cayman 2.7 - What does Sport Mode do on non-Sports Chrono car?

Hi All,

A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a new to me 981 Cayman 2.7 Manual to serve as my daily car as I don't feel like using the 992 GTS in that way.

I wanted to ask, what does Sport mode actually do apart from adjust the throttle map to make it more aggressive?

My car is non-Sports Chrono and does not have the PSE. However, it does have the Sports Design Tailpipes with the twin pipes and I do feel the exhaust note changes when in Sports mode a little. Does the exhaust note actually change or am I imagining it? If so, does the exhaust have a valve that opens up when Sports mode is engaged? I ask because sometimes I feel the exhaust note change more than at other times, and it's making me wonder that if there is an exhaust valve/flap, could this be getting stuck?

In addition, what other things does Sport mode do? Does it adjust the steering map for instance?

Here are a couple of pics of my new toy: :)

It all depends on what options you have with your car. It looks a great example from the photos.

It it manual or PDK? If PDK, in Sport it will increase the revs at which the gears change. It will also change the throttle map for faster response, raise idle RPM a bit, reduce the target engine oil temperature, and slightly turn down the traction control threshold to allow for a little bit of slip. It also stiffens up the dynamic engine mounts if you have them. I am assumng you do not have PASM adjustable dampers. It has no impact on the steering or the exhaust unless the exhaust is valved as in PSE. (You would see them at each rear corner tucked into the outer edge of each silencer.

Either way, welcome to Cayman ownership and enjoy dring it.

Best wishes, John

Hi,

Looks like a very nice “daily”! Smart [turbo?] wheels too?👍

If it’s just a basic manual without Sport Chrono or PSE, the Sport button adjusts the throttle to a more aggressive map [there are no additional steering or exhaust functions]. Sport Chrono also sets the DME to a more lively engine tune and rev limiter, but I don’t think that’s the case with your Sport button.

I’m sure that you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the handling balance of your Cayman. More than adequate performance from the 2.7L engine too. Who knows, you may become a convert!😀

Enjoy the new car.

Jeff

Thanks John. Mine is a manual and it does not have PASM.

It's a lovely car though and I'm enjoying it so far. Handles very well indeed.

Thank you Jeff. Yes, I'm pleasantly surprised with the car and love the intake howl above 5k rpm! I do seem to be picking up the keys to the Cayman more, even on the weekend! Haha.

It has quite a decent spec on the car:

20'' 911 Turbo design wheels (Basically the same wheels you see on most 981 GTS's)
Carrara White Metallic Paint
Two-Tone Leather interior with part leather dash
Front and Rear Parking sensors
Bi-Xenon Headlights
Auto Folding Mirrors with Puddle Lights
Preparation for mobile phone and Bluetooth audio
Sound Package Plus
Sports tailpipe (twin pipes rather than the single oval)
Seat heating
Wheel centres with full-colour Porsche crest
Universal Audio Interface
Top tinted windscreen

It has been turning some heads for sure and I'm really pleased with it. Will try and get a track day booked in. Has Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres all round and just had brand new discs, pads and fluid. :)
