New tyres & alignment on 993

Following shock MOT failure this morning, I'm now having to invest in a set of new tyres for my 96 993 Carrera. Only rears failed but decided to change full set anyway - especially as I've just discovered that I've been running the wrong size on the front - 215 45 ZR 17 instead of 205 50 - Doh [] Car was supplied by Portiacraft in North London who have serviced it since and mentioned nothing - who can you trust ?!! I suppose I should have paid more attention - Caveat emptor, etc......[&o]

Anyway, have decided to go for the Bridgestone S02s which a local dealer (Motorcare, Milton Keynes) can do for £510 all in. Sounds reasonable, especially as Elite quoted £535 [:D]

Is it worth getting the usual alignment done ( about £20) or go for the full Porsche 4 wheel set up I keep reading about on this forum and others ?

I would go for the full 4 wheel alignment and geo .....

When I had my front suspension sorted at JZ they did it for me and I was impressed - your tyres should last longer too !!!

Talking of tyres anyone know where I can get a good price on 2 ContSportContact N2 285/30/18's - seems Conti have a supply issue for a few weeks.

Will.

What's the best price you have found on these? Or is it a case of nobody having any?

Ian.

I recently got 285/30/18 contisportcontacts2 for 180 a tyre all in from Kwik-fit. This was about 6 weeks ago so might not have any in stock, but they have access to all the depots in the UK and can get them delivered.

Failed only on low tread on inside of rears - less visible to careless owners like me ![8|]

I thought 215's on the front of 964's and 993's was OK to help counteract understeer?

That set of S02's....are they N rated?? Also check the date on them -some stock is coming up to over five years old and should be junked.

Get the full four wheel alignment done, at least every two years......it'll be like a new car. Can recomend both JZ and GT1. Tell 'em Mel sent ya!

Are the prices being quoted for Continental Sport Contact N2 ZR as I believe these are the correct fitments for Porsche?

I'm not sure of the discount[]

http://www.elitegarages.co.uk/ is the Elite I mean - this may not be the one you mean (I just did a google search - how many Elite tyre companies are there?!)

The ones I mean are the distributors to other companies - they may therefore be cheaper?

For example I paid considerably less than the prices quoted on a different "Elite" site (Elitedirect).

Tell them it is the Porsche Club deal (as agreed with Dave) if you call.

Graham,

I know I'm not Mel, but I had my 964 done at JZM last August and they quoted (and charged) me £220 + VAT for the 4 wheel alignment. Any local tyre place who knows their stuff will refuse to do the alignment on a Porsche because the full 4 wheel alignment (assuming it needs adjusting) can take 5 - 6 hours to do - hence the price at JZM. If you get the quick 20 minute front wheel alignment done at the tyre place you might as well throw the money away you've just spent on tyres!!

Regards

Dave

Thankyou Dave -so good to have staff looking after the shop whilst one is away!!! [:D]

Also worth giving Wraysbury Tyres at Chertsey on 01932 570420 a call -they have always been competitve. Ask for Kevin or Steve and mention my name[;)]

Thanks Jamie that makes it £166.80 per tyre fitted..... not bad.

Havn't called the "other" Elite or Wraysbury Tyres yet - want to have one more look tonight at my tyres to see exactly how long I have left but I have done about 8000/9000 miles and they are close to the marker in the tread. She has fealt a little more slippy in this colder wet weather so I think it is time.....

I know it really boils down to driving style but how have all your rears tyres been on the basis of road driving only ?

You could also try PROTYRE www.micheldever.co.uk or www.protyre.co.uk they are located nation wide.
