New Tyres - Mixing

What would be the downside, if any, of putting a set of Pirelli tires on the rear and leaving my Continentals on the front (for a few months untill I can afford to replace them also?)

I have a track day next week which will put an end to my Rear Continentals and I want to change to another make of tyre after that!

Following this track day the car will be used under normal road conditions, as I will not do another track day for 3-4 months.

I have found some P Zero Rosso's 255/40/17 n rated (mail order) for £96+vat.

Wow that's a good price!

I would heartily recommend changing the fronts as well (especially if you can get them for that sort of price!)

This is where I got the price from.

http://www.johnsonstyres.com/acatalog/about.html

I have had a price for Valves/fitting/balancing for £10/wheel at my local ATS so these come in at £125 ish fully fitted.

They don't seem to have the fronts listed.

Tell a lie, are the fronts 205/50 if so they are listed @ £93 + VAT I was thinking they were 205/45.

None at all - just be aware that the two types will have different characteristics and give yourself time to get used to them. I've had Pilots on the front and Contact 1's on the rear, Contact 1 on front 2's on rear with no problem.

Why are you changing brands?

JCB..

I just fancy a change and I have heard that the Perelli's are meant to be fairly good! Better than Conti?? There also coming in cheaper!

I have been running Conti N2's on the Front and N1's on the rear for the past year or so.

Tom, be wary of Johnstons - they are close to me but never used them. Other local (and competitive tyre centres) tell me they buy a lot of used tyres from delaerships abroad where owners have asked for different brands on their new cars.
I'd check that they will be supplied with the paper stickers and wrapping intact.

Have been looking at a new set myself, and so had a read of the tyre reviews on

Black Circles

and they gave out the following for the Rosso's

Pirelli Pzero Rosso

The Pirelli Pzero Rosso is a favourite with the Porsche family. This tyre is practical but offers performance at the same time. The life is poor but as a standard fitment on the Porsche Carrera the performance is undoubted. The tyre tread pattern used is focused on handling and control. The Porsche tyre fitments are specific to the vehicle and range from N1 to N4.

Life: 2.5 out of 5
Handling: 4.5 out of 5
Noise: 3.5 out of 5

By contrast, pilot sports got:-

Michelin Pilot Sport

The Michelin Pilot Sport tyre has been used by some of the world's most glamorous performance cars. The list of users includes BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Chrysler and Ferrari. Michelin have developed and patented their C3M manufacturing technology. If you compare it on price to its competitors you will see that throughout the tyre range the Michelin tyres are at times 30% more expensive. Is this justifiable? We think it is. The tyre product is consistently good and the Michelin Pilot Sport tyre in particular offers top scores on all fronts. The only cpmpetitor we feel mounts a credible challenge is the Pirelli Pzero Rosso.

Life: 4.5 out of 5
Handling: 4.5 out of 5
Noise: 4 out of 5

Not sure how impartial the above is (they probably make more on the Michelins), but maybe they do last longer that the Pirelli's which would balance things up.

It would be interesting to know what kind of life you get out of a pair of back end Rosso's......

Oh, forgot to ask.......

I've been "offered" a set of Yokohama AVS Sport N1's at a very reasonable price, has anyone had any experience of these, good, bad, or indifferent ?

Cheers

Porsches own Tyre Tests for the last few years are linked to from the FAQ in this (Boxster) and the General sections of the forum.

The "N" rated (Porsche Approved) tyres might not perform the same as the same type/design non-"N" tyre from the same company. There is also a link about "N" rated tyes in the FAQ.

On my Audi A4 V6, fantastic, on a 964 C4, diabolical!!

Check the dates, if they are more than five years old, leave them alone.....

Thanks for the info, I phoned them up and the price they were quoting was about £12-13 less than what I could get them fitted for locally! Bearing in mind I will have to find someone to fit them it will be less hassle to go straight to the local!

Thanks for the info, when I spoke to a freind (runs a BMW specialist) he said Michelin were more expensive but lasted better than the Pirellis.

I may have a look to see if I can get some Michelen's.... I hear Costco is good for them??? Anyone got a Costco Card???

I think a lot of tyre stuff is highly subjective.

However, on Autocar's long term 996 they changed from the Michelins to Pirelli Rossos and they were very specific that the Pirellis were much better in terms of handling and ride comfort. I made the same change and would agree. The proprietor of the tyre fitter, who does a lot of work for OPCs , told me that the Pirelli tyre is lighter than the Michelin.

Couple of questions:

1) What tyres are the 987 S supplied with as OE?
2) Do Bridgestone do the SO-2's anymore?

Crysler??!! They're having a giraffe aren't they? Glamorous at a drive through wedding in Vegas perhaps.

Anybody know what the Michelin MXX3 N2 tyres are like? Meant to be the new Pilot Sports??? Couldn't find much out about them, just been quoted £155 each....

1) What tyres are the 987 S supplied with as OE? Don't know.

2) Do Bridgestone do the SO-2's anymore? Yes -Elite keep them and Wraysbury Tyres in Chertsey can get them.

Anyone recommend somewhere reasonable to get Pirelli's from in the Bournemouth area (and possibly get geometry done at same time)?

Nick
