New tyres needed

Hi all

Following a very energetic trackday at Elvington on Sunday, it seems that I may need some new tyres due to the fronts having bits missing and having a wierd tyre pattern (ie none with a beaded effect!)

Beem looking around for prices for replacement conti sports and was wondering on the whether I may as well fit some dunlop ssr's from Mr tyre as per a lot of the RS boys, aas these tyres are supposed to be the dogs b*****ks!.

Has anyone fitted these to a C4 before and how do they perform in normal day to day driving?

Thanks

Rob

Rob,
I have the SSRs on my C2. They've been on for a good six months and five or so trackdays. So far I've found them to be excellent on both road and track, though I would add that I have yet to try them on really wet roads (no doubt will get a chance in the next few months !). The wear rate has been surprisingly good, but if I really think about it I've not done all that many miles (car was in the body shop for 3 months !). Having said all that, the one major plus is the price. The SSRs are cheaper than any of the normal 'performance' road tyres, so frankly who cares if they wear a bit quicker ? The only problem with them is the sizing, they don't produce a 205 and 255 in 17", so you have to use a 215 and 245 combo, but I've not found this to be an issue - helps a bit with turn-in even.

Thanks Jamie

Pre-empting the responses I'm ordering a set from Mr Tyres on Wednesday.

Like you say, cheap as, even compared to normal, non performance tyres

Hi Rob,

So I wasn't the only one phoning around for tyres on Monday morning then?[:)]

I was down to the canvas on the fronts of the Crossfire!

On different subject, I think I may have some video of you out on the track, I'll have a look and see. I have posted a page up with some pics and videos from the day at:

Hi Simon

If you have got some video of me (in the car and not the dodgy stuff that's on the net[;)]) that would be great, already seen the photo of my C4 and Jasons RS on your site.

Got a great deal on some tyres from Mr Tyre in Brum. £487 for a set of 4 dunlop ssr's delivered. If you want his number give me a mail.

Rob

Thanks for the tyre info, I ended up with some P Zeros from ETC in the end, seems the OEM Michelin Pilots (same sizes as a 911 strangely!) are like hen's teeth at the moment and no distributors will have them in for a few weeks.

I'll have a look through the footage and see what I have, dodgy or otherwise [:D]

Had the tyres fitted yesterday, had to have 225 fronts as that was all he had left.

Due to yesterdays weather around these parts, I can confirm that a new set of ssr's are not the best in the snow[;)]

Can't wait to try in the dry

Price!!, so much cheaper than conti's and the like. I don't do a lot of mileage each year (mainly dry), hoping to do more track days next year so thought I'd go for the ssr's now rather than later.

Plus, I think Adrian with the M.Blue 964rs had these on his car when we did a photo shoot at Bruntingthorpe last year on a wet day and he was still lapping like s**t off a shiney shovel!!

I am hoping to get a s/h set of cup 1's sometime as a spare set with normal tyres, but the trackday a couple of weeks ago completely ripped the conti's I had to bits. (Prob. driver and not tyres fault tho'[;)])

But I tell you the road between Ellistown and Bardon was "interesting" last night!!!

Rob

Rob,

I had a look at prices on www.etyres.co.uk for Conti's N Rated and they were £129 each for the Rear (255/40x 17) and £120 each for the front (205/50x17) that was including vat and fitting which comes out to just under £500 which I thought was very good.

Yes the roads were very interesting between Hugglescote and Coalville, I struggled to get up my driveway last night...... lots of grit before I could get the rear tyres to stop spinning.

I suppose I do a fair few miles 14K per annum and love to drive my car every day.

I think tyres are a personal choice sometimes, have had Conti's on most of my PORSCHES, tried the P Zeros on my 996 C4 and did not like them at all !

No snow tonight, so we will both have a better drive home !
