New tyres, only 5,000 miles

Found that the outside edge of the front tyres have started wearing badly, tread worn out. Spoke to opc hatfield who said that this does happen with 20" low profile tyres on the cayenne.
They took the car in to check alignment, camber etc etc, at a cost of around £300 to myself.
They said everything was set up ok and that this is normal.

I asked why their salesman had not advised me of this when he was getting me to pile on the £15k worth of extras, to which there was no reply.

Has anyone else out there had any problems with 20" tyres ?

Help needed before I blow a gasket. I do not want to be changing tyres every 5000 miles

Thanks everyone

probably normal if you drive enthusiastically. The KN is a 2.3 tonne vehicle and simple physics dictate that its going to be thirsty, and heavy on brakes and tyres. The 20" wheel has minimal side wall and therefore accentutates stresses at the tyre edge. I Got 10,000 out of my 18" Pzero rossos, so 5000 from 20" probably isn't too bad. If running costs are an issue it would have been wise to have asked some probing questions before signing. The fact that you have £15,000 of extras would make me more concerned about depreciation costs rather than tyre costs, as you may have lost £15-20K in depreciation over the same time period, ie £4 a mile, so £600 for some tyres is really neither here nor there...

While I agree with your statement about the tyres, I beg to disagree with your depreciation calculations, I think it depends on what he spent the £15,000 on, before I bought mime with £10,000 worth of extras, I did a lot of searches on the cost of cayennes, I compared the prices of used ones againt a new one with very similar extras, there wasonly £2000 between them, I then compared used ones with very minimal extras (no PCM, manual transmission, 17" tyres etc) to a more desirable with a modest extras ( PCM,Tiptronic,19" tyres, sunroof ), there was £5000 in price difference, this shows that some extras will hold value.
I only opted for a new one because of two years warranty porsche gives, if I buy used, I will end up with only 1 year warranty and cayennes are not cheap to run out of warranty. I may end up spending the money saved buying used on repairs and I wasnt ready to take the chance.

As an interesting comparison, our family transport is an X5 diesel sport. Just replaced the first X5 with a new one in March this year.

We ran the first X5 for three years and 52,000 very enthusiastically driven miles.

Only needed one set of tyres at 27,000.

If there was a £2000 forecourt price difference then that would translate to at least £8K trade in difference. KN's don't seem to be shifting from the OPC's that quickly if s/h.. My opc is estimating a trade in of £30K for my KN after two years (55K new) with £15K of that depreciation happening in the first 9 months I don't think its too far off the mark.., maybee £10-15K in first 6000 miles would be closer..

I managed to get 25,OOO miles out of the tyres on my old audi allroad diesel, but comparing an allroad or X5 with circa 200BHP and a KN with 450 or even 340 BHP isn't really relevant when it comes to tyre wear..

If they are wearing on the outside I would of thought a bit of negative camber should help - don't know if its possible on the Cayenne though

Not sure if yours is an S or Turbo, but 5k sounds a nightmare.
I have now had two sets of Turanzos at 15k and 30k (second set prompted by a nail on a front which was nearing the wear bars), so consistent if not brilliant. These on standard 18" rims.
Also interested in real world second hand prices, anyone managed to sell privately?

Mine, or her's should i say, is an S. They checked the settings of the vehicle at OPC, and said that the settings were ok. ? ? ?

Oh well, something else to add to the yearly out goings, or maybe I should get the shopping delivered, ha,ha .

Is it not time that Porsche gave a 4 year warranty if they are that good.?
I am now finding that faults supposed to have been fixed a year or more ago
are still there and with the car 2 years and 3 months old I may have to pay.
On tyres I am close to 15000 on standard wheels and tyres with geriatric driving.

There is definitely something wrong there! My 22" fronts have a fair bit of life left in them and they have been put through their paces for 10000+ plus miles including about 15 laps of the ring..
