NEW TYRES

Front or rear?

Front recently cost me £144 by quikfit' s " fit at your office" service.

Thanks tony, it' s the rear ones.I' ve got my local kwik fit down to £115 per tyre including fitting balancing+++++.sounds like i' m not going to better that.???

I would have guessed £120 +/- £10 for local variations.
So it seems you are looking at a fair price.

You going to them will be cheaper than them coming to you.

Rgds, Stuart.

Not much choice when it happens on the M4 70 miles from home & on your way to a meeting!

ouch! blow out or slow puncher? did you call porsche assist out? or get home on the stupid spare?
you were lucky if thay had a replacment in stock i always seem to have to order mine .

by the way i' ve got 1 hardly used(rear) 17" conti sport n2 rated tyre sitting in my garage if anyone wants it ,you can have it.

Helen (or anyone else for that matter)
I was under the impression that N2 spec tyres was the more modern version of an N1 spec tyre. Is this right?

Alex

From what i understand you are correct. but it is not advisable to mix a n1 with a n2.in other words all the tyres on your car should have the same ratings.

A rather tense blow out whilst in the outer lane!

As I had to be at the meeting, drove on the silly spare at 50 - then arranged for Kwikfit to turn up whilst in the aforsaid meeting! Actually logistically worked out quite well.

wow tony! i' m not sure if your unlucky because it happened or very lucky cos your here to tell us about it.
i' m impressed with your driving skills!

Wow, an outside lane blow-out ! Do you have PSM or superhuman driving abilities ? I reckon my underwear would have been a write-off. Can we have the details please.

No PSM; Just Bl**dy lucky but was quite frightening at the time. What is really quite ironic was that the blow out probably saved me my [currently still] clean licence - I was tanking it a little when it happened.

After changing onto the spare I was trundling along the M4 and around about J17 ish there is a long stretch downhill. And who happened to be tucked away with a laser / radar? Quite amusing crawling past at 50! As it was the driver' s front wheel (bright red!) they would not have known & I half expected them to pull me over on the basis that I must have been taking the **!

Glad to hear you escaped unhurt and with your license intact.
When I wanted to replace a P Zero on my old 2.5 my local tyre dealer would only supply a pair. They said each axle had to be replaced in pairs and could not supply a single tyre.
Anybody know anything about that?

The handbook (Driver' s Manual in Porsche parlance) mentions that " deviations in tread depth must not exceed 30% on one axle" .

Therefore if the new one is 8mm (I think that' s the spec) then the other one should be 5.6mm or more.

On a 2 wheel drive car, the front would be less of an issue than the back. On the rear or in the case of a 4 wheel drive it would put a load on the diffs.

Rgds, Stuart.

It appears that I know little of tyres but I would like to say that our SmartArse has Yoko's fitted:

175/50 R 16
205/45 R 16

and they have peformed very well wet and dry.

I know it's not a Boxster but don't knock it 'till you've tried it! [;)]

JCB..

I've got Yokohama AVS fitted to 18" GT3 wheels. I've never been that bothered about road noise although I can't say there's any noticable tyre roar at any speeds. In terms of wear they seem about on a par with other makes - I tend to be hard on the rears because most of my driving is on back roads in 2nd/3rd gear. Performance wise they have utterly unshakable grip in the absolute dry, but I find they're definitely slippy when wet, though progressive (or as progressive as a rear engined car permits). Mind you, tyres 265 wide aren't going to give good wet weather grip anyway.

I've had the car on Yokohamas for 3 years and they haven't given me good cause to think about changing tyre manufacturer.

Oh - and the tread pattern is very pretty ...

Assuming you have Pirellis on the front you should stick to Pirellis at the rear rather than going for Michelin Pilot Sport at the rear.

What model year is your Boxster/Boxster S? and what is the wheel size?

in reply to the previous question, my boxster is 2.5 1998. r17 wheels. today i have been quoted 325 pounds for two Pirelli P zero N3's. This includes fitting, balancing and valves etc, which is local (East Kent). I have been quoted 295 pounds but this is in East London.

Hopefully after reading Mark's link on the "N-Marking" you will have a better idea on what they mean; the reason I ask for the year and size is I wanted to look up in the Porsche Christophorus Magazine on what Pirellis were available for your car and yes Pirelli P-Zero N3 are the latest N rating for your car. Have you tried Kwik-Fit, they currently have a discount on Pirellis... also check the Tyres bit on the Trader's index on this forum:

Mark, the links in the FAQ for "Porsche Tyre Test" are still broken and just checked the new layout of the Porsche sites, it seems you can no longer provide direct URL links to such articles as they are now ActiveX links; so for example the 2003 article "Technology - An All-Round Successful Marriage" is now here:
