The original ones can fail due to cracking of the housing, and the Lindsey ones re-use that housing. OK they crack test it, but that doesn't stop it cracking next week/month/year. Also you can sell your old one if you go TiAL whereas it's a core for exchange on the Lindsey one which skews the cost comparison.

The problem with the modified OEM wastegates is that the cast body of the wastegate can crack. The one I removed was cracked but my current Lindsay racing one seems to be holding up OK.
Is this different to the ones that some people have been experiencing problems with ?
Any idea of UK costs, as $330 for the one I listed above seems very reasonable ! [8|][8|] oh no more money outgoing . . . . . . .

A lot of people pin a BHP level onto a wastegate when selecting what wastegate to use on a specific application.
If you want to be able to run a car with a big turbo, but be able to run it at a high boost level sometimes, and other times use it at a very low boost level, then you will need a big wastegate to be able to give you that flexibility, as the wastegate will be expected to dump a reasonably large volume of exhaust gas when on the low boost level.
On a 2.5 engine, in most applications a small wastegate will be able to provide all the flexibility you could ever ask for.
On a 3.2 engine we tend to use a big wastegate, as the volume of exhaust gasses involved tend to be quite high and therefor to get that flexability you need to be able to dump a proportionally larger amount of exhaust gas.
The other benefit of a larger wastegate, apart from flow, is that a larger wastegate such as a big TIAL is finned to assist with cooling, both during operation and during cooldown after a run. Where as the small volume TIALs do not have cooling fins at all. So reliability comes into it..
As far as BHP levels go, you could run a 1000BHP monster on a baby wastegate, the integral wastegates used on most Jap tuned up turbo cars are tiny compared with even the smallest TIAL wastegae, so BHP levels do not come into it really.
As a side note, the Tial wastegates I use are not as they arrive from the factory, each one is stripped down, stress risers removed, they are re-sprung for the intended application and put together with replacement pipes for the intended purpose. In effect each one is a custom job... We have not had any problems with them sticking, although we have with Lindsay items, but then again, as I just said, we do not use the Tial's as they arrive out of the box.
