ORIGINAL: alexoctagon Hi My windscreen got cracked in the main zone the other day and after calling AutoGlass they have just told me that in addition to my £90 excess, they want a further £200 because my insurer only covers screen's up to the value of £1000. Is this normal? Cheers, Alex
New one to me .... What is the age of your car and the insurer?

ORIGINAL: alexoctagon It's an 09 Cayman S, the Insurer is Redstar, through Adrian Flux
Well I do know that Porsche still own the rights to the glass on your car and as such 'Gavin' and his mates at AG cannot use OEM glass replacements, hence the high cost. (Personally I hate OEM and would insist on Manufacturer supplied glass). As for your insurer I would double check your policy schedule and if there is no maximum claim listed contact the insurer directly and complain. You may also find that AG have their own internal claim limits; if so go to an independent glass fitter.

Alex, I'd suggest that you take the car to your OPC and get them to arrange the repair. They'll generally use an outsourced fitter who's familiar with fitting Porsche-approved windscreens. You may have to pay slightly more than the standard excess, but I'd be surprised if it was £200. Jeff

Hi, Had my screen replaced last year on my 996CS at Cambridge Porsche Ctr total cost was £648.86 this included a Porsche fitting kit and comes with a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty against bad workmanship etc. My car has SAT NAV and phone module plus top tint My insurance company uses Highway Windscreens and would not pay for Porsche to fit the screen, but would you trust your Porsche with them? So £1000 for a screen semms highly unlikely!!!!!!! Take it to Porsche as suggested[:D]

Thanks for the advice, I called up Porsche Cambs and they said that with seals and fitting the whole lot comes to £639 +VAT. My insurance co. apparently is happy for me to go to them instead and send them the bill so all sorted :) Enjoyed telling the plonker at Autoglass to forget it, he seemed to have a bit of an attitude problem from the start, telling me that "that is what happens when you have an expensive car like that" in a highly patronising tone.

Interesting, so, are Autoglass fleecing insurers ?

Haven't done it yet but £100 excess for me to get my done at OPC Aberdeen via Manning Insurance.
