Newbie Advice Please

Hi there, new to the forum and also to Porsche. Just after a bit of advice on my new toy.

I'm currently looking at a number of Boxster S', one which I'm really interested in and am going for a test drive in is a Speed Yellow, 01 (Y), 17000 miles, all usual items, leather CD, wind deflector etc. Tyres are pretty much brand new.

Price is £29995, is this a good price. It's also got the old orange indicators, at what age did Porsche carryout the facelift to the Boxster?

I'm guessing 2002?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The facelift at the end of '02 saw alot less of the orange indicators, so if your looking for a 2000/'01, your going to get orange indicators unless someone has mod'd it.

Sounds good mileage for the age, price is, IMO, possibly toward the top end, of course that's without seeing it's condition. I can't imagine for that price that it would be anything less than spotless. Is this a private seller or a dealer?

Thanks guys.

It's a trader, he's made no bones about saying his cars are expensive, however he also pays top price for the cars he gets in if he's interested. Only deals in Specialist stuff.

But all his cars are immaculate. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say who he is? But he does have a very good reputation and some of the Porsches he has are amazing. RS, RSR, RUF, Strosek.

I'd get a 12 month warranty, 12 month tax / MOT. And all the cars are prepared with ZYMOL. Which is nice.[:)]

If you've got £30k to play with, it would be worth going for the 2003 model facelift version. You get the clear indicators off course, but there were some other more significant mods - slightly more power and torque giving better performance and fuel consumption, a glass rear window which is a much more significant improvement than you may think, plus some other cosmetic tweaks such as cupholders, different alloys and so on.

In order to make the step up you may have to sacrifice the extra-low miles. A car used with care and maintained absolutely to the dot will be a better used buy than a low milage, unloved car used to trudge through the city traffic chewing the clutch, or thrashed for a few miles before being warmed up properly.

make sure the warrenty covers you for having to replace a RMS(rear main seal)

price seems a little steep to me but if its in mint condition which it should be with those miles on the clock then go for it.

A Facelift 2.7 might also be a good option if your looking for a good spec, low mileage car.

The 2.7 is pretty quick. Helen and I have had both now and there isn't that much to choose between them really. (that'll get them going[;)])

Hope you find what you're looking for!

Sorry, could I please ask what the story is with the "Rear Main Seal".

He's got about 5 Boxsters all with varying mileage, there's a silver one, same price but with higher mileage (27000) and it's a year younger. Plus the glass rear window sounds good.

Shouldn't mention this on here, but I used to own a Z3[:(], plastic screen as well.

Thanks again for the advice.

I'll second that. The heated glass rear window is a big improvement. You don't have to wait until its warm before lowering the top for fear of cracking the plastic rear screen. There's also more power and niceties like a glovebox etc. You would get a newer car with not a huge difference in performance.

18" Carrera wheels are good as well!

Followed all the advice and found a standard Boxster at an OPC for £30k, Silver, full grey leather, hard top, 53 plate, 27k miles.

Driving this as well. See what difference there is between an older S and a quite young Boxster.

Your budget is creeping up to the price of a 987 2.7!

Unless you live in fear of the hood being slashed or live in the Alps, the hard top in my opinion is not worth the money. The normal hood seals perfectly, is reasonably quiet and can put up with any British winter. Additionally off course, you can go topless whenever you want without it. May be worth trying to get that taken off the price - or factor it's value on e-bay in your calculation of what you're paying.

I would suggest that you make sure the car has climate, alloy upgrade, leather and metallic as the minimum. BOSE, heated bum warmers, Xenon Litronic headlights and full Sat Nav are the tasty stuff that you may get if you're lucky.

Your question on the rear main seal will be fully answered with a quick search on this site. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice everybody.

I'm sure there'll be more questions once I've driven a few this weekend[:)]
