hi all,

just bought my first 944. a 1989 S2 cab in need of some TLC.

please don't laugh at the asking price, cars cost a lot out here!

tbh, it was the Road Tax that made me choke. I swear I'll never complain again! [;)]
 
From memory the roof wasn't electric in all markets, but that's about the extent of my knowledge. There were parts available at one time, but a repair will probably cheaper.

Welcome along, nice looking '44 you have there, not sure about the roof operation but maybe you would be able to remove the motors and then just fold it down and haul it up as needed?

unfortunately, you can only import cars into Singapore that are under 3 years old or over 35 years old. for all the years in between we are stuck with what is already here.

when you do import a car you have to pay 100 - 120% import tax plus 20% duty plus 7% VAT and then you need to buy a COE which is a bit of paper that allows the car to be used on the road. A COE only lasts for 10 years then you have to buy a new bit of paper. currently that bit of paper costs about GBP40k!
 
And then they tax you £1,500-odd a year on top of youy £4,000 PA COE depreciation! That's enough to start a revolution.
 
collected the car over the weekend and took it for a long shakedown drive.

a couple of things i need to put on the shopping are a new cam/valve cover and gaskets - i can find the gasket sets but can't seem to find any covers for sale. has anyone got ay leads?

roof to window seals need replacing. i understand that these are NLA - anyone got any ideas? i have tried the usual breakers.

the owners manual says that i can use a spark plug tool to manually wind the roof up, but i can't work out where that's meant to go - any leads?

the gear stick boots/garter area gets very warm (could even say hot). what does this mean? gearbox overheating or exhaust leak perhaps?

other than that is drives very well. the gearbox is lovely to use (compared to the 4 speed in my 930 and the 915 in my SC) the balance of the car is very, very flattering for a man of my limited driving ability and the engine pulls very well indeed. fells stronger than the published 207bhp.
 
The gearbox is a transaxle (at the back of the car)! The leather gaiter getting hot almost certainly means that the rubber gaiter underneath has perished and split, letting heat from the exhaust in.
 
Hi. Manual operation of the roof...just checked in my handbook:

"If the electric folding top positioning mechanism should fail the roof may be closed manually.
1. Remove caps from rear side trims.
2. Loosen both bolts using a wheel brace approx. 4 turns.
3 Unfold top and lock in position."

There's a picture that shows the wheel brace inserted in a hole just to the rear of the speaker in the rear quarter trim panel.

The car looks good...a nice colour, Alpine White!!

You can get all the parts diagrams from the Porsche website...just Google "PET" and you should see a link. They're very helpful.

my wife and I were in Singapore a few months ago great place, she lived there for 10 years as a child.

I was shocked when I was there as to how difficult and expensive owning a car is!

enjoy the cabby you should get more roof down days than we do!

Regarding things like seals, if Porsche don't stock them (don't take one persons word, talk to at least one PC with a part number), the only suggestion would be to find the right profile rubber. Most can be remade by restorers, otherwise there would be no vintage cars on the road!

good news is that i've got the roof to work by playing around with the microswitches.

another hard drive today, the suspension seems to bottom out easily so perhaps new shocks need to go on the list too.

will start on that shopping list.
