Newbie, headgasket!

I have just bought a 89 2.7 944 off my brother in law. The car has very good history but unfortunately the headgasket has gone. I have already taken the head off and had it skimmed. I will be in the process of putting back together this week. My question regards which antifreeze to refill with. I have read that it needs to be phosphate free for alloy engines. Do you know of any brand names which suit it? Do halfords/motor world sell any?
Thanks.

I would recommend 'Mobil Antifreeze Advanced' as it is specifically designed for aluminium engines and is recommend by Porsche. As I understand it the coolant degrades faster when in contact with aluminium than it does with cast iron, so it is important to change it regularly.

I don't know but I assumed that, with most modern engines being made of alloy, any current anti freeze should be OK. I've used both Halfrauds blue and pink antifreeze with no apparent problems.

My indie uses a Texaco product - a choice of two in fact; neither of which I know the name of. The one I had was some fancy 5 year lifespan stuff (like my engine ever goes 5 years without coming out of the car...) and with equally fancy thermal properties as I recall.

I use the VAG purple coolant which you cant get from any Audi/Skoda/VW dealership, its called G12 plus. Says its suitable for all types of engine and can be safely mixed with other coolants. Also says suitable for "filled for live" applications, which I assume means it has a very long life ?

PS. Make sure you get some de-ionised water to mix with it as well (battery top-up water), whatever you do don't use tap water the chemicals added to it will attack the metals in the engine. Water wetter is also a popular additive as it can help lower the temperatures :)

The Ford stuff (Pink) is meant to last 10 years. Not sure about that.....

Fen,

I suppose you should choose whichever is cheapest - whatever it is, it'll be effective at cleaning the grease off the outside lane of the motorway[:D]

(sorry couldn't help it)

Good point. Of course it is my civic duty to deposit coolant along with oil by way of attempting to minimise staining of Her Majesty's Highway.

And here was me choosing to hold my tongue about not needing coolant in my Porsche and I get abused anyway [8|] [:D]

I have bought some antifreeze from motor world. It's phosphate free and works in alloy engines. The trade name is called 'Prestone'. Not sure what colour it is, as i've not opened it yet.

I have to say that I concur.

Now someone will post telling us that we are wrong [][]
