Newbie Intro and Advice Sought

Hi, been a member of the site for a couple of months now and just over a month ago finally bought myself a Guards Red 1986 944 Turbo. [:)]

It has approx' '82k miles on the clock, with full history with a full recent brake overhaul including new pads, master cylnder and brake pipes throughout. Overall it is in fantastic condition which is the reason for seeking advice/experience/wisdom from someone on here.

I would very much like to keep it in this condition and have read throughout this forum about sills and front wings being areas prone to rust. Whilst I am planning to use it for weekends and not really planning to take it out when the roads have been salted I would like to prolong it condition/life.

I have been into classic cars for some time and Waxoyl is still heavily used to prevent corrosion in sills, etc. I have search through this forum and find no mention of it and would welcome ideas/experiences on rust proofing these cars, products to use and areas to focus on. I have had a look around the sills which seem to be inaccesible and therefore am left wondering how they rust through [8|]

Hope someone can help and look forward to meeting some of you at the events throughout next year

Cheers

Rich

hiya rich, congrats on your "new baby!", and having her in red means shes totally faster then all the others [apart from other red ones!], i think you may need to get to a specialist or someone who can get a tele-scopic camera into the gaps/ sills and then will be able to see what condition your sills etc are in, all the best and welcome regards jason p

Hi Rich, and welcome.

I'm going to add a faq on this when I get time, unless anyone else does it first. Please! [;)]

The front wings have a liner, take this out and you can clean and protect behind. The bottom edge is where they go, but when wings are removed there can be the beginnings of corrosion down below the a-pillar so spray liberally before replacing liner.

Sills can be inspected easily. Pop out the black vent in the door jamb:

Then you can shine a torch down, and even put your han inside and take pics of the whole sill with a cameraphone.

It's good enough to get the idea.

It's also really easy to waxoyl the inside of the sill through here with a long lance, although Bilthamber products seem to be the most popular here. You can set the search for a longer time period, there is a lot more info available.

Always the first point of call when inspecting a possible future purchase! Will also tell you if it has had sills or rear arch repairs carried out in the past too,

Streamline your search to the 944 forum and search for Dinitrol, Bilthamber and Waxoyl within the last year. You should find dozens of threads as it is an often discussed point.

You can access the sill through the vent as mentioned by Paul, but there are also several drainage slits at the bottom of the sills, about an inch long that you can poke a thin lance into. Be careful not to block these drains tho []

Beautiful first purchase though! Lucky find or long search? Either way you've come out good. I've been having poor luck with the ones I've seen in the last few months. Ended up getting an M3 as I needed a quick fix. Casually looking still but not sure what I'll do if I find one.

The strange thing about buying mine was that I wasn't looking for one!!

I went to look at a 911 which I was close to buying and then spotted this in the showroom at Gmund in Knaresborough.

I had always liked them, going back to the eighties but never expected to own one. Having just test driven the 911 SC Targa, I asked for a drive and realised what a superb car it was compared to the '82 911, and had to have it.

Been really pleased with it so far, Gmund overhauled the brakes completely including a new master cylinder and flexible pipes, I then took it to my local specialist; Pro-Porsche in Brighouse, West Yorkshire and have had the pads replaced all round with genuine items and have had new brake sensors fitted, so they are like new.

Took it out today, loved every minute of it

Looking forward to many weekend drives in it and a trip to Le Mans and the Nurburgring next year is planned

Incidentally, anyone in West Yorkshire who is looking for a good honest specialist, I cannot recommend Pro-Porsche enough, look them up on the web

Cheers

Rich
