First post, only picked up my Porsches this week! A pair of Porsche 924, both W-reg 2litre versions. Between them I hope to make one good car!

Car 1 - Red'n'cracked
Picked up in Cambridge and towed 50 miles home. Has a running engine (lacks fan belt) and no exhaust box, sounds ace! Sh1t alloys, spare is standard 924. OK condition interior (some splits need looking at) and the full size lift out fibre glass roof (a bit cracked and manky might need to find a replacement).
Car was originally a dark red, been resprayed a slightly lighter colour on outside and it's cracked and gone textured like leather! Had a bump at front and needs wing, headlight and front panel. Oh and it has stupid racing stickers all over it!
Has the sunroof, rear spoiler and both door mirrors so think it's a fair spec.

Car 2 - Red'n'blue (registered 1st Jan 1981 - cool!)
Picked up a couple of miles from home, and has all the bits I need!
Engine doesn't run yet (not been started for 2 years) but turns over. Has an exhaust that might be OK. Has the original alloys (hand painted black centres) that I want, with a matching spare (so 6 in total). Has an aftermarket glass sunroof. Panels are straight so will take the ones I need.
The interior is stripped. Guy started a rebuilt and lost interest due to health issues. No seats or door cards but everything else is there just loose! The wiring is a mess and hence why I'm not bothering with this one.
Car was originally a nice light blue but was resprayed red badly, the paint is lifting and really thick!
Car is a basic spec I think as no spoiler, no standard sunroof and one door mirror.
Does have a non standard rear bumper trim as well.
So plan this weekend is to strip the red'n'blue one of anything I might need or of value and get it taken away asap.

Few Qs:
Any bits of the 924 engine worth keeping just in case like the head?
Front panel - can't seem to work out how to remove, hoping it's not welded in!
Spoiler or not? Classic part, but like the smooth look without as well. Any thoughts?
Colours? Back to original Red or summat else? Until I sort the mechanicals it might just all end up red primer for time being!

Nice one Mark

Keep us all up to date on progress.
If you have the room it can't hurt to keep a bundle of extra spares, including an engine - and if you don't need them you can always sell bits at the various Porsche Autojumbles. Or maybe the good folks here might snap them up.

Welcome to the forum.

The spoiler is already on the cherry red one, I'd keep it.
I presume you're using the second one as spares
I like the interior of the first one.

What are the mileages. Mine seems to go faster each month. I think the engine needs to wear a bit before it gives the best. I'm sure there are cars that need about 100K or more to break in.

Good project, keep us posted. You should be able to remove the badge panel as follows...

4 screws along top of panel where bonnet shuts.
If you pop up the lights there are 2 each side under the rubber moulding
Finally, with the lights still up, there's one each side that goes through the end of the panel right into the nose of the front wings. Easy to miss this one.

Should be all the fixings I think. Was on my later car, I assume it's the same on the early models.

regards, phil

Started the strip down, front suspension, wings, rest of interior, lights etc off.
Few random pics:
The OK exhaust and new fuel lines (yippee). Need to get back box welded or replaced.

The fairly crack free dash now in the loft, better than the one in the keeper so may swap one day.

The pretty much rust free inner wing, not bad for 25 years old:

The b7stard bolt for the wing, hidden under headlamp wiper rubber:

The bent sill on both sides, needed to straighten out to get off, will need to do a careful job on the one I'm keeping:

This weekend I plan to drop the engine out, and nick anything else off ready for it to go to the garage in the sky on Tuesday, to be made into some cr&ppy Hyundai I expect. Wonder if you can specify what your car can be made into, like with body organs?
Front panel is welded along top edge on mine so may have to leave on.

Been busy after working away all week:
Had a good day today, chopped the front end off:

Dropped the engine out:

And stripped boot and door, dumped back down on the blocks:

And wrapped up the dead body for collection:

Hopefully going Tuesday, then I can start work on the keeper next weekend, which still looks like this (better without silly stickers!):

Hello Mark

Car is looking much better already without the stickers.
It looks like a powerhose under the wheelarches would rid the car of about 6 pounds of mud!

Sad to see the old car off to the great garage in the sky, but good to see it come to use to keep another going.

I would like to send you a Register form via e-mail to record details of your two cars (Yes including RLA 854W as I want to record its demise on the Register database) I tried to send you an e-mail on the forum address but it didn't work.

If it's okay with you can you supply your e-mail address please.

Ta.

Email sent!
Here's the interior as well, very minimalist, defo like the original blue colour, pity it was covered up.

Register form sent!

What's first on the agenda for PNU - paintwork?

Nice pictures btw.
It's actually quite informative to see what the bare car looks like and how everything fits together.

First thing is strip and prime the wings and headlight from the scrapper, then swap them over to the keeper to sort out the currently stuck lights.

Then check over the brakes etc, basic engine service, fit the exhaust and belts and try and MOT it to see what other stuff it might need.

Then worry about paint!

Well one's gone, here's the farewell shot as the other one looks on!

Two days after this the council came around as one of my neighbours had reported me for "operating a car repair business from a domestic residence". Feckers! Council guy was very apologetic and admitted it was cr&p!
Some people eh? Just because some of my neighbours take their car to the garage to change the air freshener they get all sh1tty when someone knows what end of a ratchet to hold!

Wow keep up the good work, and dont worry about your neighbours, it's the wife you have to keep sweet [;)]

Were you grinding the front end off the donor car at 2am or something?

Perhaps you should work on you car in a dinner jacket to throw them off the scent in future.

Living a mere 2/3 mins from Steve Gerrard's house with its claimed 16 -42" plasma tv system(ie 1 in every room),I get funny looks just washing my own cars. When in overalls,(and I have to don them in the near future to replace the bottom wishbone bushes on the 924S).people are too embarrassed to look at me.In actuality, they probably would like to know how to do things themselves but are stuck paying £105 per hour to have the air freshener changed at the local BMW dealership.
Would have liked to see some thick polythene to protect the the brick paviours, though.

Finally had some time to work on the car. After sitting for 3 months she started up first time and moved onto the driveway. Sanded down the wings off the scrapper to find way more filler than I expected, still better than what I have so primed up and made the best of them.
Stripped NS wing off, easy, arch seems very sounds, only the odd bit of flaking underseal to sort out:
nsarch.jpg

Then took of the OS wing, bit tricky as some numpty had welded the front mounting on, took a while to free up (sorry for poor pic):
weldwing.jpg

Managed to get both wings on and the new NS light cover (original was dented):
oswing.jpg

nswing.jpg

Panel gaps on the wings aren't great mind but will do for now - photo also shows the lovely crazy paving paintwork -
nswing2.jpg

Also painted the front panel black, paint was shot and it's a bit bananed so no point spraying for time being:
front.jpg

It's getting there, will be nice just to get it all red oxided for time being.
Also found a nice water leak, opened passenger door and water just appeared, seemed to be sitting on the cill. Anyone know where to look for leak, is it likely to be door or sunroof/ wind screen?

Coming on well I hope the neighbours are less nosey now![]
What colour are you planning?I saw a 924 in red at one of the shows and it looked superb also white is nice too.

Mark

Loved the pictures of the 924 project. Will it be ready for the Frontrunners event in April? If so bring it along so we can all see the end result in the metal.

This is a very good thread indeed - i have similar jobs to do on my 924 so the pics are very handy![:)]

Cheers for positive feedback! Did a little bit more today, took off the duct tape holding the cracked sunroof on (and several layers of paint, good job the paintwork is cacky) and fitted the one off ebay. The lining is brown rather than black like rest of car so will have to chnage over at some point, hoping this might cure the leak (still not sure where it came from).

Can you see the slight colour difference [:)]

Also liberally siliconed around windscreen, and swapped near side rear fixed window as the seals seemed poor. Getting it out was easy, took 2 of us half an hour to get new one in!

Hoping it will be dry now. Just need to get the passenger seat out to help dry the carpet out, seat is stuck solid so can get to front bolts only.
