Newbie - keen on 997 Turbo, seeking advice

Hello all,

Am new to the club, signed up about 2 weeks ago. Am allotted to area R20 and on the day my membership letter arrived they had a gathering which was close to me, so I popped down (with my 2 and half year old car enthusiast son).

Anyway, as a kid, I like many had Porsche pics on my wall - 964 Turbo. It was THE car for me as a kid and the Turbo just seemed to be the coolest term ever.

Now as an adult, having already got my other fave car (which is only driven on dry weekends), I am potentially moving out of the London rat race and would need an everyday car for work/commute. Being self employed means my work is mainly designed around me.

Having worked hard over the years and having commuted like many, I would like to now enjoy my commutes driving a car I really like.

I want a 911 and it really has to be a Turbo.
I am a fan of the older 903 And 964 Turbos shape and sound. But I do need to have the modern comforts of a modern car.
The number 7 is also my fave number.

So, after a long think I decided the 997 has the looks and comforts and it's got the number 7 in it too.

Only thing is I have never driven a 911 and would like to, all being well, purchase one later this year.

I would like to know if any advice might be forthcoming about the car and your experiences when you were new 997 Turbo owners.

Also, any recommendations of good/approved dealers would be appreciated.

I would like a 2007 model, ideally in blue with a tan interior as a must.

Thank you in advance.

Being London based you do have many options Both official Porsche centres and fine indy's Ring a few up, have a chat [:)]

R20 are a good bunch. I think if you want that colour combo you should be able to nab one a bit cheaper as 997 turbos in Cobalt Blue seem to be marmite and prices tend to be in the late 30's / early 40's price wise. I like Cobalt personally. Not sure on tan. GT Silver is a nice shade. Good luck

I tend to agree Blue good Grey leather with blue piping would be ideal Brown/tan a no no Drive one Hope it goes well

Thank you for you replies. I am planning on swinging by Paul Stephens Porsche in Halstead as I spoke to them and gave them spec. They invited me to pop by and maybe do a test drive on a 997 Turbo to feel it out. Looking forward to that very much.

If you have never driven a 997 Turbo before- most Porsche actually! Make sure you get the feel of the brake pedal first- I still remember my first test drive in one thinking holey moley, where's the brakes!! The pedal is not over assisted like many other cars.... [;)]

Unless you're driving a 991 version of course! [:D] Regards, Clive.
I never noticed a massive difference to the pedal [&:] mind you I was more interested in the one on the right [8D]

I am really looking forward also hearing the sound of a Turbo. I don't know if all Turbos sound the same but I do really like what I call the 'Porsche 911' exhaust sound which is a distinctive hollow sound followed by a spitting purr on the inhale. The sound of sports car are a little secret fave of mine and I really enjoy a nice sounding car. The Jag F Type is probably one of the best sounding cars of recent years. So really looking forward the test drive on Saturday. Here is the sound of my current car. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FpKLodPUmzw

Found this pic...perfect.

If its the sound you are after then maybe the Turbo isn't the one.. It sounds wonderful when following one but does somewhat lack that Porsche roar of sports pipes.. In my eyes a bonus for making stealthy progress but if its sound you want more so... maybe not.

Sound is one aspect of the character of the car I would like to be as I always imagine what a Turbo should sound. That blue Turbo Magnus Walker drives is pretty perfect sounding for me.

Most people comment that the newer turbos are pretty quiet. You may need to fit an aftermarket system. I don't think you can realistically compare a 930 sound to a newer 997 T
