Newbie looking at prospective C2 purchase.

Greetings all! Great to find a forum with a good 964 knowledge base.

Now...I've sold my 944 S2 and about to take the plunge into 964 ownership (gulp!)
I've managed to source a nice 1990 C2- baltic blue/linen leather with 105k. FPSH, and all the old MOT's.
Looks like it also had an engine rebuild at about 50k under warranty (I'm guessing probably oil leaks?)
No AC and 40% LSD and (I think) the chap mentioned that it was specced without a Catylitic converter- does that sound right?

It's also had the teardrop and cup 1 17 inch wheel upgrade done at some point.

How do I tell if these wheels are genuine Porsche items?- I recall reading something ,but can't for the life of me remember where.

Also, the distributor belt snapped and was changed by Specialist cars of Malton free of charge, just after the current owner bought the car from them about 4 years ago. Its only done about 5k since then,so I'm assuming the belt should be ok?

Sorry for the glut of questions, but any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers, J

Hi there and welcome.

All early 964 engines had a factory recall on them if they leaked and Porsche would rebuild the engine under warranty so this is probably what it has had. Not that many owners did somewhat surprisingly.

If it was specced without a CAT it should be one of the options on the bonnet sticker and it could well have come this way. Because the car is pre Aug 1992 you are allowed to remove the CAT if you don't want it so even if it has one you can have it removed.

Very few early 964 have A/C so seems right.

If the Cup 1s are genuine it will have the width and offset stamped each side of the valve stem, eg 7 on one side and 55 on the other side of the valve for the front. Probably 8 52 on the rear or if you are very lucky 9 55.

Dissi belt will be OK, just make sure there is a pipe coming out of the distributer body as this is the vent mod that will mean it won't happen again.

Ian.

Get a pre-purchase inspection from a Porsche specialist before buying. It will save you money in the long run.
An unloved 964 can cost you the earth. A loved 964 will make the earth move (or something like that).
I'm not suggesting you pay out for every car you see to be inspected. Just those that you think are good.
Good cars have lots of RECENT service history. Past history and a massive file of receipts are good but what is better is how the car has been treated just before it is yours!

its not half as practicle (everyday) as my beloved 944s2 but out on an empty country lane that i know well and..........................WOW!! you'll love it.

Thanks for all the advice, folks. ( had to login under a new name as I tried to update my email address for HAB5000, and now I can't login under that username ???)

Going to see the car sometime this week, though it's in the middle of nowhere( Outer Hebrides!)
I phoned Specialist cars of Malton to get a bit of feedback on the car and they sold it to the current owner for £20000 in 2003 with the mileage at 99K. The chap assured me it was a minter at the time of sale. I'm hoping considering it's only had very occasional use, that it'll still measure up as a good buy,but we'll wait and see how it pans out.

Couple of other queries : Is a clutch job on a C2 an engine out job,or is it only the C4 that requires this?

How noisy is it likely to be considering it has a sports exhaust fitted?, I live in a quiet residential area, and don't want to antagonize the neighbours too much,if possible.

I did an HPI check on the car and its come up with this :

G433 TAG was applied to this vehicle on 16/03/1999.
This VRM has been recorded as having an outstanding finance agreement.
An outstanding finance agreement was recorded on 10/06/1999 against a 99U 90PORSCHE 911 CARRERA..

The car has had 3 plate changes since this time (2 private plates and the current G plate) so I'm assuming this doesn't affect the car as it stands now?

Cheers all!

I nearly had to go that far for mine (Berwick on Tweed might as well be the outer hebredies for a soft southerner like myself [;)] )!!

Depending on the exhaust it might not be that loud; mine is de-catted with a cone filter, and its got a nice sound to it without being deafening. Its actually quite quiet at motorway speeds (and above [:D] ). While mines quite loud around town, first thing in the morning I only trickle along anyway so its not too bad; I think the guy over the road from me with a knackered old diesel transit makes more of a racket... One old woman of about 90 who walks her dog when Im on my way to work shocked me by saying how nice it sounded!.. Also 1,400rpm in 1st is just right to set off 3 or 4 car alarms on my street, so I tend to avoid than speed early in the morning. The noise at this speed also made 3 small children cry in my local multi-storey not long ago much to my amusement (judging by the dead arm I received sue wasn't too impressed tho')

If it's too noisy you can get a second hand final silencer for about £150 and it's a fairly easy DIY if you can get someone to help.

If the current owner bought it from Malton in 2003 that outstanding finance issue which pre-dates it should be dead.

Whats the deal with 9 55 being lucky? is it a superstition thing or are they just rare?

i understand it relates to width/offset, but is it a better handling set-up or just looks cooler due to fatter rear tyres? please excuse my ignorance!

ben

Lucky as in rare. Genuine Cup 1s in 7 or 8 are generally quite hard to find with the 9 inch rear being virtually impossible to find.

Both the 8 and 9 rears take the same size tyre but the 9 is the better rim size for the tire. Cup 2s fitted to the 933, which have the same tire sizes as the 964, use the wider 9 inch rim presumably because it works better with the tire (BTW Cup 2s off the 993 will fit on a 964 if you wish but don't look as good on a 964 IMO).

I only ask as your post sprung into my mind last night while giving my car a well deserved (and overdue) clean, and I have the afore mentioned 55-9 stamped on my rear wheels!.. Better fit an extra set of locking wheel nuts [:D]

I I bought it!! Here's a photo on the Isle of Lewis just after the deal was sone.

Just got back last night after picking up my new 964 C2 from the Outer Hebrides,of all places.

I've known the car and the owner for a couple of years(the PO bought it from Specialist cars of Malton in '04 for £20000 at 99k) So once I saw it for sale,I was up there like a bullet!

Managed to grind him down to £16000,with the mileage at 105k. All the old MOT's and totally complete dealership history including details of engine rebuild under warranty at 40k,and the dual mass flywheel and clutch were changed at 65k-the flywheel was changed to the RS part.

The spec is almost exactly what I wanted:
Baltic Blue,linen leather,40% LSD,no AC,Cat delete option,sports seats,genuine cup 1 wheels,teardrops, stainless sports exhaust.

First impressions:
Feels very small inside and the offset pedals and cramped footwell after the S2 took some getting used to,as did the floor hinged pedals. The gearchange can't be rushed when cold. Crazy dashboard with switches in some quite bizarre places-I wouldn't change it though. It's part of the appeal for me,and it looks totally cool imo.

Steering feel is fantastic, I thought the S2 was good but this is in a different league.Turn in is razor sharp, and its a lot more pointy than I was expecting, also it corners very flat and your always aware of the engine hanging out the back though it feels very stable, and a lot less intimidating than I was expecting, though to be honest I wasn't pushing particularly hard. What I did find was going from a full tank to a (nearly) empty tank changed the feel of the front end fairly significantly, but again it never felt like it would turn into a problem.

The noise with the sports exhaust is just incredible, noisy when you want it to be, but tolerable at cruising speeds, though you can always here that flat 6 throb;what I did find fairly intrusive was the tyre roar on certain surfaces, I'm sure this is worse with the 255/40/17's on the back rather than the standard tyres.

Once I reached Perth and the motorway back to Edinburgh, the weather went from dry to a high wind and torrential rain with standing water on the road surface. Felt a bit apprehensive at first, but the car coped admirably.

Sorry for waffling on at length, but it's fair to say I'm absolutely smitten! The car just oozes character and personality and I can see me keeping this one for a very long time.
