newbie, plz read

hi all, new here, my story? well i have allways loved the 944's but not had the funds to ever have one, and still dont! lol but my friend new i like them so he asked around who asked around...etc and someone new of one going free, thought it was a joke at first, but i got in contact with this guy and turns out cosha, needs alot of work but its all there, still had tax and m.o.t. so i went and drove my new found 1984 square dash 944 fire guard red over 70 miles to get it back into my empty garage (my garage isnt on my house) so i started working on her and found the m.o.t. to be doddgy, as simple things like the indicators made the fogs flash, but still the drive was smooth and the engine sounded very sound, clock only at 80k or so (engine looks newer than car) coolant didn't look like its been changed for 10 years, limescale came flooding out, changed thermostat as fan wouldn't kick in...

anyway's i drivvle on, my point is, i am going to get her looked over body and structuraly wise as its pointless carring on if the car is nackard (sry guys but i dont have that kind of money) if ok then i will start stripping (the car) and find a very slow leak on the fuel tank.

I hope the inspection turns out well, but go into it with your eyes open as most of the repairs can get very expensive, very quickly

As suggested, MOT would be a good starting point unless you know already it's got many fail points. Look forward to seeing some pics
 
Can't beat getting something for free, and with MOT & tax so you get to drive it before you start restoring is even better!!

hi ppl, thanks for your support, yes it was nice to drive it, it did feel nice and mechanically smooth, but to be honest i'm not technically minded, so this will be a huge lurning curve for me, Yes i think an mot would be a good start, i have to do a quick repair on the fuel tank as there is a slow leak, got some fuel retardent filler, as if all is well i will strip the tank and repair properly, I will get some pics whilst i'm over there doing this, watch this space.

Where abouts are you?
 
Check the fuel lines for corrosion, especially at the rear where they go from the floor section to the panel over the rear axle. This is a coomon spot for corrosion.
 
Without wanting to get ahead of things here, I wouldn't bother fixing the fuel tank. To repair a tank properly you'd need to take it off, and you could just fit a replacement tank. Early Lux's had metal tanks but later cars had plastic tanks and they go on for ever, and must be worth buttons second hand as no-one wants them.

yes, just done a temp repair on tank, i did look into the later "plastic" tank but found the pattern different and was told it needed "modding to fit as its 80lt instead of 66lt steel tank, took some piccys so i will get those up soon, (lost my adapter lol)
so car being lifted to mot next week (for safety)
