newbie questions

Hi, I'm considering a 924 ownership and I hope you can help with some questions:
1)is it normal for a 924 to have a heavy clutch - gears work fine, slight whine but heavy to push in the clutch pedal but gear change spot on?
2) should the front valance and side sills be smooth or rough finished, and sound a little more like fiberglass than metal when you tap em with your fingernail? No evidence of rust.
3) is it fair to have a bit of oil leakage on the rear diff underneath the car?
4) after accelerating and quickly removing foot from pedal, is it ok that there is a bit of a "thunk" from the rear axle?

thanks for your help!

H i and welcome
1 bit heavy is ok
2 should be peinted metal with stone chip on - body colour may sound dull
3 would not expect any drip - slight weep poss but only dampen the crud
4 dont like sound of that !.....
hope that help

4) I don't like the sound of that either, i'd identify what it is before buying

thanks guys! any idea what I should look for that could be causing that? There was no shuddering or anything else whilst at speed or 30mph or less.

When buying my last car the 'thunk' turned out to require a new clutch and gearbox. Luckily I'd knocked the price down considerably to allow for something major. Needs checking!!

Unless car is FANTASTIC all over Id walk away. Only proviso is is you were to do all the work yourself but evenso clutches are 3-400 quid for the bits, and you have to remove the gearbox to change it,
Diff and gearbox are usually solid if a little whinney - leave it alone.

Could be one or both of the driveshaft cv joints (4 in total) easy to do - but expensive parts - about 50 quid per unit.

The gearbox is leaking too so its a large bill!

Looks like the seal and or bearing on the nearside , which may be connected with the noises, but as I've said unless the rest of the car is perfect (bit I can see doesnt) and warrents the remainder bringing up to the same level Id leave it.
If you've already got it, a gearbox can be relativly cheap and if you want to play I d change it first, NB they dont balance easily!

Keep looking!,

I dont know you budget or how much work you can / want to do yourself, but would say that a decent 924 should be available at £1000, less if your lucky maybe a lot less! and I've seen a VERY good "S" for £3K. (That was advertised as a "Le Mans" but wasn't)

A friend got one with MOT and ran it for a year with minimal expenditure for £225, but he did the bits of work himself.

Good luck with the search

Mike
