Newbie Turbo Owner

Hi chaps, just bought a 964 Turbo so I thought I'd pop my head in and say hi [:)]

You may have seen the car on the PH classifieds last month; It's the one that has been modified for track use so I guess a limited market. I've had a supercharged Mustang for the last four years which has been a bit of a garage queen so I wanted a car I wouldn't get too precious about. I also do a lot of trackdays with a track prepared BMW E36 so liked the idea of a 964 that will do the same job. Obviously if it's raining or even remotely damp, I'll be using the BMW [:D] I own the BMW with a friend who has gone halves with me on the Porsche too, so at least the running costs will halved.

Although the car has spent a lot of time on the track, it's had plenty of cash spent on the mechanicals and the body is in good condition.

The engine has been built by Dave Perry and runs 430 BHP at 0.9 bar with an electronic boost controller which is supposed to up the power to just shy of 500 BHP at 1.3 bar. It's currently (I think) running a 1 bar spring but the EBC isn't altering the boost for some reason.

The car only weighs around 1,250kgs apparently, having had most of the sound deadening and much of the interior trim removed. The doors are aluminium and the boot/rear spoiler is carbon fibre. The rear arches feature the Turbo S cooling ducts. It's also got a full cage, buckets (trimmed in Porsche leather), harnesses, perspex windows etc.

The suspension is an adjustable H&R set up and stopping is achieved with 993 RS calipers. Since it's mainly been used for trackdays the set up is on the jaw braking side of firm at the moment but to be honest I couldn't care less, it's an absolute hoot to drive......and very quick. My Mustang has 500bhp but in the right gear the 964 blows it in to the weeds.

Went up to Tech9 last week, who are going to fit some 993 RS front strut mounts for us (the stock ones are shot). Also going to have a bit of a service and geometry set up done, after which it'll be visiting Dyno Demon to have the EBC sorted out. At the moment it looks like a boost leak (although we are getting 0.98 bar) or the EBC solenoid.

It'll certainly be getting use on track but we'll also be using it as a weekend car and for trips to the Le Mans Classic etc......man, that's going to be hot and painful [:D]

It still needs a proper wash and wax but here are a few pics.

Cheers. Midnight Blue is certainly a colour that needs to be kept clean I reckon.

Almost certainly up at Oulton for it's first outing as we are only 30 minutes away, maybe in November but if not one of the early ones next year in April/May.

Basically our track BMW needs a bit of work but I wouldn't book a day if that wasn't ready. There's no way I'd take the 964 on the track in terrible weather, it'd be no fun having all that power and no way of using it!

You'll be pleased to know that there's a very active bunch of us 964 owners that do regular trackdays at Oulton. Everything from C2s and C4s, a variety of RSs and an RSR turbo. We're there next on the PCGB day on November 3rd. Come and join us [;)]

Excellent! Even if we don't have the car on track, we'll definitely try to get up there.

Just had a look at the trackday section. I couldn't find any information on cost for additional drivers?

I think you can just pay for additional drivers on the day....about 20 quid I think. Passenger wrist bands are also on the day for a tenner. Garages are free on first come first served. I get there early, grab a garage and set up the group kettle [:D]. The PCGB day there at the end of the year is usually quiet with about 40 cars....so loads of track time with little traffic.

And while I'm at it....THE Porsche trackday of the year at Oulton is the RS day which is organised by Melv on the 964RS forum. 12th March next year...see the sticky near the top of the 964RS forum.

Oh and I forgot to say....come down to the 964 sprint day at Curborough at the end of this month where you'll meet 20+ of us. See the sticky near the top of this board for more information. It's only an hour drive from Cheshire...probably less for you [;)]

Welcome aboard!

Ive been following this car a little on the 911uk forum and it looks better each time I see it!

Good luck with the project and keep us posted with developments :)

Cheers mate, will be sure to keep posting developments, with plenty of track photos to come hopefully [:)]

Ben

That looks fantastic and must be a hoot to drive and listen to 'on song'. Hope it keeps you smiling (I've got substantially less power in my stock 3.6t, but it makes me grin (nearly) every time the boost comes in[:)]).

May see you trackside or at Classic LM in 2010.

Thanks guys. I've got to say, I really am truly made up with it. Just got to adapt my driving style and learn how to drive it now.

Mike - definite plans for track action and the Classic. You'll see us in France; we'll be the ones pulled over on the Autoroute trying to cool down, and get some life back in to our dead legs [:D] The sound is a funny one coming from the Mustang with the big V8 rumble. The Porsche is quieter to start with then you get that loud roar and you know you're about to be launched down the road [:)]

Nick - I do love the wheels. LM's look fantastic on most Porsches. I've seen a few on darker cars with the centre sections painted gold, which looks pretty smart too.
