Hello 928 forum, just joined the club, the search for a 928 has begun. Ideally looking for a S4 or GTS as I think prefer an auto, but may consider a GT manual. Off to see one in Stoke tomorrow, S4. Working my way through the essentials buyers guide. Looking for a good one - don't want to do anything other than drive and maintain it. Previous car history : Gardner Douglas GD427 V8, Triumph TR6, Z4 3.0. Intend to come along to as many meets as possible.

Regards

Colin

Hi Colin, Welcome.
The chances of you finding a good manual are slim anyway so auto will be the best shot. I can assure you the manual is much more fun but the auto is best suited to the big engine. Good luck finding one where there is nothing wrong with it ! They all have electrical gremlins of some kind and are a lot of car for the money, but parts are expensive. They are nothing like your previous cars.
If you have no prior experience of Porsche you will need to take someone with you who knows them as you will get stung with a massive bill.
I'm dealing with the plate lift issue right now on the brakes.
Good luck in your search. See you at the meets.

Hi Colin, pretty quiet in the 928 section. Had my S4 for 3 months now and just love it, a great cursing car with great soundtrack and surprising handling. Get one with history, especially recent, they always drive great even when they need a lot spent on them.

Mine needed belts and water pump circa £550 but engine mounts were shot £700 then a myriad of stuff while the cross member is off so costs ramp up pretty quickly.

Good luck in your search!

Cheers
Paul.

Thanks both,

Drove one recently with sunroof, headroom tight. Lovely drive however. I plan to get any car which looks like a good candidate into Porsche for a full check up, and will only buy with a full history. Minimal number of owners also preferred. All too easy to take things at face value as I have learnt from experience. Plan to budget for annual pre emptive maintenance. Looking forward to seeing more cars in the flesh over coming months.

Hi Colin,
I got mine from Japan ( my friend there knows another one for sale, although you would have to factor in shipping costs, import duty and vat ) Here`s mine which arrived last week.
Cheers,
Michael

Michael,

Congratulations on the purchase. You're a braver soul than me. I need to see it in the flesh and have it checked over by those in the know before I'll buy. There seem to be a few more coming to market. Went to see a red 928 S4 at the weekend - not the car for me - but useful to gauge it against the other car I have seen. See a PCGB member has a red gts for sale on pistonheads. Anyone know it? Thinking about calling - looks like non sunroof, it's a bit rich for what I want to pay, and having just been to see a red one (admittedly the paintwork was in need of some attention), I'm not sure I'm mad about red. Apologies to all Guards Red owners.

Colin

Hi Colin,
You only get one life so go for it I always say. My car cost £500 plus £2500 costs ( shipping, import duty and the dreaded vat ! ) The way I see it I have a car worth 50 to 100 % cheaper than I would have if I didn`t go for it. I had a brand new one of these 20 years ago, I think it was around £70,000, this one I have now is as good, if not better.
Cheers,
Michael

Hi Colin,
Just had a look at the pistonheads car you mentioned, nice but personally I can`t see how the extra power etc could justify the large purchase price.
I agree on the Guards Red not being so great on a Porsche, I had a couple of red Ferraris and the colour looked better on those.
Cheers,
Michael
