newbie with 944 turbo question

hi guys,im very new to this scene having only just bought a h reg 944 turbo for some weekend fun/light restoration and maybe if it will take it some track use.

the car i have got has very good service history and has only done about 8k miles in the last 10 years.had a freshen up at hartech and also recently serviced at 911 in warrington.

what i have noticed is when driving it the temp gauge goes higher than i would ideally expect it to-up to about two-thirds of the way up.doesnt really go any higher and tends to go down a bit when driving.also if you put the heater on and fain inside car it helps it drop to about halfway.the rad cooling fans are coming in and i can hear the electric water pump working.

anyone else with a 944 turbo who can tell me what temp their car runs on the gauge.i was tempted to either
fit aftermarket gauge/fit new fan switch/fit new temp sender/wire fans up to a switch.
its running a bit over standard with a promax stage 1 kit, heyward and scott exhaust.love its performance and its looks-so much in fact its currently being stripped for full repaint.

thanks in advance
jason

Jason mine runs halfway up the temp guage, the hot weather may take it up a little these cars run 2 cooling fans 1 kicks in at 90o and the other at 95 i think figures may be wrong is this happening ? be aware that one fan kicks in if you have AC switched on.
There is a temp sensor in the top of the radiator which may be iffy ?
Oh and welcome to 944 ownership.

Anywhere between the two marks labelled 80 and 100 is normal according to the manual. The fans should kick in as it approaches the second line and keep it in check. Most cars with a fairly old thermostat will run a bit cooler around the first mark because it opens too early. My Turbo runs almost exactly half way between the two marks

When was the last coolant change, was it bled properly and how recent is your waterpump and thermostat?

hi guys and thanks for the replies.

im wondering if there is a bit of an airlock in the system somewhere due to its inactivity over the last few years.
i think ill change the fan switch and thermostat as a matter of course.im wondering how well the fans are turning though as when you put the interior heaters on full it brings the temp gauge down to half......there is a receipt for a water pump less than 10k ago.

ive heard there is a special way to bleed the cooling system on these cars? also are there any bleed screws in the system?

update;

well,i decided that the car needed a bit of a cosmetic facelift due to old paint, stone chips etc so i got a mate to paint it for me-which took forever!
however the car is now back with me and nice and shiny now.but i still had the hot running issue so i decided to have a look into it.i ordered both new thermostats and a new fan switch.i drained all the fluid out only to find there were no thermostats fitted to the engine!which made me a little worried as it was already running hotter than i would deem as acceptable.anyway, with the new thermostats fitted, new switch, fresh anti freeze and some watter wetter for good measure i can happily say that it runs cooler now than i would have expected it to-runs about a third of the way up gauge now(instead of over two-thirds) and hardly ever reaches halfway now unless sat in traffic, but you only have to rev it slightly and it will drop down again to a third.i now have the confidence to drive the car properly.........
its going(hopefully) on the roller as a local rolling road day mid december-would be nice to see what power it has as it has a promax stage 1 kit and heyward and scott exhaust fitted and its already a 250 bhp model(h reg).

New thermostats should see you running about horizontal on the temp gauge, around 90ish. Water wetter can drop your temp by 10 degress I gather so what you report should be about right.
There's always a discussion abut the pros and cons of ww - cooler engine v less efficient combustion. I don't know enough of the technical stuff to have a very informed opinion although I would be happier with with a car running cool than hot!
Stage 1 kit should give you 280 ish, not sure about the torque though, which it seems, is more important.

Mine runs very cold, so I assume the Thermostat is stuck open, betwee 60 and 80 on the guage above, if I spank it it will go up to just over 80, if I get stuck at 40 all the way to the station in the morning it will barely lift off the red bit at the bottom

I would be putting a new thermostat in Jeremy as the engine will be running rich and washing all the oil off the bores! I would probably be having a good smell of the oil as well to see if there is lots of petrol in it too!

what i dont understand with mine is that it ran very hot indeed with no thermostats fitted, but now theyre in it runs as i would have expected it to.can only imagine i may have had an air lock or maybe the fan switch was not right

I wouldn't put too much credit on what the gauge reads.
I have the exact same thermostat in the turbo and S2 (Wahler 83°C), the S2 reads a shade over the 80°C mark, the turbo reads under the 80°C mark.
On the S2 the fans kick in when reaching the 100°C mark, on the turbo they kick in when the gauge reaches halfway between the 80°C and the 100°C mark.
