Newbie with a Timing Belt Change Question

Hello,

Do not yet have a Boxster but hope to soon. I have spotted a 2002 2.7 Boxster with 38,000 miles on the clock and a full Porsch service history, although I have not checked this yet.

My questions relate to the changing of the cam belt as I assume that although the car has not reached the milage to require it changing their will also be a time consideration which is normally around 5 years. If my assumptions are correct he my questions are,

1 can I safely assume with a full Porsch service history the belt will have been changed ?
2 what will it cost to have the belt changed by a main agent or specialist ?
3 I am mechanically trained on lesser cars than Porsch and also commercial vehicles but it was a long time ago ! Can this be done as a DIY job and has anyone done it ?

Look forward to your advice and comments

Many Thanks,

John

Hi and welcome....

There is however an auxiliary drive belt that should be inspected and replaced at regular intervals.

Rough guide on time is inspect at 4, 10, 16 years and replace at the 6, 12 and 18 year points.

There are also some mileage recommendations for the above and should be in the maintenance book.

It wont tear the shirt off your back either. Circa 35 pounds for an inspection, about the same for just the part and replacement is around 70 pounds all in. You could DIY but if you need the stamp in the book then 70 pounds isn't too bad.

Hey thanks for the quick responses !

No timing belt is excellent new !

The engine sounded sweet as a nut on the car i looked at so no timing chain issues ! Might go back and do a deal

Thanks

To change the polybelt will take all of 2 minutes once the engine cover is off, probably half an hour from start to finish, an easy DIY job for someone like you. For what it costs you may as well change it and know you have a good one from day one.
