Hey, im new here (and to Porsches) and just thought Id introduce myself seen as I will be snooping around here and no doubt asking lots of dumb questions over the coming months!

Im a car nut from leicester, and after a string of classic and sports cars, Ive decided to take the plunge and start looking for my childhood dream-car; I am hoping to buy a nice 912 sometime this year!

Im pretty new to the whole porsche thing, so I apologise in advance for any dumb questions!.. I have a reasonable level of mechanical knowledge, and some experience working on (dare I say it?!) beetles, but Im someone who'd rather ask twice than mess a job up once.

Leicester seems to be a bit of a dead spot for old porsches (however I did see a 911T a couple of weeks ago at the local petrol station; it zipped off before I got a chance to nose around it!) so if anyone knows of anywhere in the area thats a good resource for parts, cars, etc., I would be greatful. Also if anyone can recommend any good books or internet buying guides (I just found the 912 register site) that would be great too!..

b :)

Welcome oh feline one,
The only dumb question is the one you never ask, or so they tell me.
Plenty of friendly folk around here to help so ask away.

Books wise try Duane Spencers 912 book, good place to start...
The Register site has a reasonable amount of basic info to get you started and there are a few cars for sale too.

Just make sure you get a PPi done!

Happy hunting

Hi your in my neck of the woods.

your welcome to join us at a meeting at Appley Inn, Appleby Parva next tuesday from 8pm. if i know your coming (and if its not raining) then i might be persuaded to bring the 912 along for you to nose around.

as for buying, your going to have to be willing to travel a bit to get the car you want. take a look at Gavins web site for cars for sale. for bits well i'll give you all the info at the meeting [8D]

Hi Helen, I didnt realise there was a meeting in Leicester?!..
That sounds like a great place for me to start; thanks for the invite. I wont be able to make next Tuesday though, as I have an all-day assesment centre for a new job on Wednesday, and I want to try and get an early night in beforehand!
Is this a regular meeting, or a once in a while thing? I will definitely come along another time! Im not sure where appleby parva is (I dont stray out of the city centre much, except to go to work) but will have a look on a map tonight; there are "parva's" all around here, so Im sure it cant be that far!

Ben

PS. Thanks for the tip on the book Mr Evil

its a regular meeting. theres also regular meets at coopers arms, Weston on trent (theres a porsche specialist scrap yard not far where we meet..though it mainly has 924s and 944s)nr Derby. next ones on monday 9th.

and one on Thursday 21st April at The old Royal Oak, Hockley Heath, Nr Solihull.

i also hold the odd meet/polishing session at my house. [8D]

sounds good.. I live in the middle of Leicester so will probably try to come along to one of the meetings at Appleby Parva (its only a couple of miles from work) as the others might be a bit of a treck!..
The polishing sessions sound like an excelent idea; so do I just drop my car off and you clean it for me, or have I got the wrong end of the stick?! [:D]
