Kerry!! 80°C (on the gauge) under normal driving conditions, rising to about 90°C in heavy traffic sounds right to me. Edit: In my experience, the temperature gauge usually shows a lower temperature than actual water temperature for some odd reason.

Welcome Kerry Just remember if you run low on Petrol and don't put more than about 25 litres in It Will not SHOW!! Enjoy tour car !!

It's a yes, yes, IMO. You won't get a better sound for the money.

One of the chaps on here had the bypass pipes fitted by Style Dynamix who iirc are in Hayes. If you search back through threads from about 2 or 3 years ago by rhkumar , you'll find pictures and details. The search facility here isn't the best, but make sure you specify posts in a time frame (before 1 year) and you should be OK.

It was most probably me yes style dynamix west london 0208 561 0001 hayes Cant remember but it was cheaper than changing whole system i went for 1.5 and it sounds beautiful on gassing it

Hi Kerry - welcome to the world of 996. Just a word from the wise, my 996 C2 is same vintage as yours - don't know about yours but mine had the original exhaust and I started out aiming for the gundo hack but basically the old system was too knackered and frayed to accept the modification. You won't know until you get it up on the ramp of course, and if a previous owner has changed the back boxes at some stage you may be OK. Otherwise be careful you don't throw money at patching old boxes which may not have much life left in them anyway - Gundo hack prices vary but most people I have spoken to work on around £250 ish (some have paid more some less). After much agonizing I went for a full ss setup which sounds and goes epically. The high flow cat was probably the best investment for me, (around £700 plus fitting - some places will fit it for free if you buy from them). Alternatively you could just get the Dansk boxes around £650 plus fitting. All these Stainless bits will marry up to the exisitng mild steel fittings, so you can build up your exhaust a bit at a time and spread cost. Your manifolds may even be OK (mine were shot literally threads of metal holding them on), so you might not even need to do those at all - if they do need doing getting the nuts/studs off is by all accounts a pig of a job. There is loads of info on the forum about exhausts. My recent thread is called Finally Exhausted and I got the whole thing including manifolds done for a little over 2 2K including fitting. That was definitely the one thing I did find out - a good specialist fitter is essential! Good luck - let us know how you get on. J

Thanks Julius for the welcome and for taking the time to respond to me in such detail, I have jacked up the car and had a look around the exhaust and on the surface it looks ok but you never know whats hidden behind the bumper. The car has only got 54K from new and has lived in a garage all its life. The manifolds were changed just before i bought the car and according to the receipts they had to drill out 6 bolts !!. I had some work done at JZM the other day (seized vary cam solenoid ) and i asked them to have a look over the car when they had it on the ramp and they said it look good. I will also have a look in to those exhausts you have. Do you have a sound clip of yours by any chance ? thanks kerry

Having done it once I can now get my front Bumper (PU) of in about 45 mins Back in under 30 minutes Its the kind of job you should do once a year to keep it all clear of crap Especially the Front where leaves can cause VERY expensive damage Its quite an easy job - lots of details on the forums The Front PU can be modified to stop leaves getting inbut I would still remove it once a year. All the correct screws and fittings are available at local Porsche Centre for pennies

Aha - good to hear the manifolds are OK - they are very much the key to it. On mine 11/12 bolts/studs sheared during removal - they had to be drilled retapped, and I believe copper or brass nuts were used to avoid the problem in the future - not that I hope they're coming off again in the lifetime of my ownership! So its sounds like a Gundo should work for you - you might want ot think of adding the hi flow cats at a later time; I understand they work just as well with the standard boxes and definitely the best bit of it in terms of bang for buck; I went for 63mm diameter tubing pipes in the Designtek range - I was sweating a bit when I placed the order, but I have to say it turned out to be a good call. http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/pt63_399_-cma81-cmo110-ct345/Porsche/996--911--1997-05/996-C2-3-4L-1997-08-01/Catalyst---Bypass/ I will see if I can get a decent recording of the sound - its right up there with current 991's now - I have a friend with a new 4S and its very similar in tone. Still good inside the car for everyday use, just a nice deep thrum from the rear at motorway speed. Anyway good luck with your project!

Here you go - I'm no James Cameron, but this clip gives a flavour of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7Vqoavw7rM&feature=em-upload_owner
