Next set of upgrades - some questions

Hi Guys,

Been enjoying the car since it came back from the bodyshop and with the new suspension and brakes. I have just ticked over to 12mths of ownership and the car has been nigh on faultless. Feels as solid as a rock.

I have had a few small things done recently at HP Motorsport in East London / Essex (very good on the air cooled cars and far closer to me than RPM Technik where I was taking it before). I had hot air coming into the cabin from the main vents and left hand window switch was broken and a few other small fiddly things.

I plan to take it in for a 24k mile service in early August. I will get a leakdown test done as well to see where the engine is at.

Some other questions:

1. Has anyone upgraded their headlights (bulbs/HID conversion etc) that they would recommend and is MOT compliant. A xenon upgrade or the like would be great as the standard lighting isnt great.

2. I am noticing at time that my gear change can be quite stiff going into and out of first gear at times. Its pretty random and probably happens maybe 2 or 3 times when I drive it. Any idea what this is? could it be engine mounts needing an upgrade or would it be signs the gearbox is on the way out? clutch problem?

Cheers guys

AC

Andrew, your clutch slave needs bleeding or at worst replacing. You can confirm this by seeing if it goes into 1st gear easily with the engine off. I gave the same advice to Marcus (mcg0) and the bleed worked for him.

Problems with worn engine mounts are mostly manifested by difficulty downshifting while on the move.

[FONT=verdana, geneva"]Yup, Steve and Gaz right on both counts...

Bled the clutch slave cylinder and all works good - thread here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=625083 Swepco 201 worked better for me under harsh conditions at Silverstone too.

Cleaned out the headlights (very carefully on the reflector bowels), installed a pair of 100w xenon blue bulbs for a tenner (think it was a tenner). Big improvement over previous dull lighting. However, probably still not as bright/sharp as HID conversion, but then how often am I driving at night when I would really benefit from the cost and fitting time (as Gaz mentioned)..?

Would be interested to hear how you get on with the gear selection issue though.

I read somewhere that HID lighting kits are not suitable fitment on older cars because the reflectors are not suitable and cause excesive glare therefore will not pass the MOT. This is not mentioned by the vendors.

I fitted them to mine soon after buying it 30 months ago as the yellow cnadles in there were useless.
Now it's like daylight and drivers don't flash and MOT passes OK.
I read somewhere that they were cracking down on retro fitting HID's to cars that don't have the beam
Beam adjuster but the 964 has so no worries.

Add to that auto levelling, another HID requisite and you're good to go.

That's what I meant Kevin, only it was late and the grey cells were struggling.

Dekker - any link to the product you ended up going with?!

They were very good with customer service as one of the inverters blew after 6 months and they replaced no problem with extra grommets. Copied below is the shipping note and the price is Feb '09
