Nitrogen Filled Tyres

I notice that some of the more performance oriented tyre dealers are offering nitrogen at approx £2.00/Tyre

Has anyone tried thsi yet, and are the results any good.

I understand it elliminates pressure variations due to temp.

Tim, the thread you refer to seems a little disjointed (to me!!)
Can't quite work out whether the consensus is that Nitrogen is a good thing or a bad thing. [8|]
 
Good if you are racing, as the pressures are more predictable (no water vapour). Good because it leaks through the metal rims slower. Good, in general, I suppose, but how do you top up the nitrogen pressure on a daily/weekly checking basis ?

Ok, buy a cylinder of nitrogen (pretty cheap, as very commonly used in industry), and stick in garage (or boot, when you take the car out - have you seen how heavy they can be ? !), but then pumping up the tyres could be a bit fraught.

OK, I will stop now, and take a deep, relaxing breath from my white capped cylinder (they are colour coded, for the uninitiated).

What would the implications be of having an initial fill with Nitrogen and then top ups with compressed air on a garage forecourt? ( Or are we just getting too complicated now???)
 
I thought the disjointed thread (there is another somewhere as well) concluded that the effects were so marginal that it was a complete waste of time.

Bit like driving around with an ice cube sellotaped near the air intake to get denser air in the combustion chamber.

Well, you would be replacing Nitrogen with Nitrogen/Oxygen (plus traces of H2O, Neon, Argon etc.) - Ok, lets just call it air - so what would be the point of the initial Nitrogen only ?
 
That's basically what I was getting at. So there's no real point then, unless the garages who charge £2.00 for an initial fill, also charge 10p for each top-up. Hhmmmmmmm. [8|]
 
I think the main worry would be that one tyre topped up with an air/nitrogen mix would expand at a different rate to the other three on pure nitrogen. Leading to a potentially dangerous situation with one tyre at a different hot pressure to the other three.
 
In an F1 car, this would be noticeable; in a road car, even on the track, this would be hard to tell. Apart from chance to say ' I lost it because....'
