Cayman Chatter: Porsche insists it won't build racing version of new coupe
AUTOWEEK
Posted Date: 6/1/05

Contrary to hints of a lightweight racing version of the new Boxster-based mid-engined Cayman coupe (AW, May 30), Porsche research and development officials in Weissach insist there is no club sport or stripped-for-racing Cayman in the works.

"The racing edge of Porsche is, and will remain, the 911," said chief engineer Wolfgang Durheimer. "No production car will supplant it anytime soon. There is no plan for a Cayman intended for racing at any level."

The 2006 Cayman S is powered by a new 3.4-liter version of Porsche's horizontally opposed six, generating 295 hp, or 15 more than the current Boxster S. The Cayman S will be the high-trim, top-output coupe variant. Another Cayman in development"”a standard model with less equipment than that of the S"”is likely to be powered by a 3.0-liter, 260-hp boxer six. That version may not go on sale for more than a year after the launch of the Cayman S.

Cayman S debuts at the Frankfurt motor show this fall and goes on sale in the United States by spring 2006.

Interesting this - I did a quick search and found that the Cayman is discussed more on the Boxster Forum than on any other. I too have a passing interest in the new boy of Porsche's line up and cannot wait to see one in the flesh, but I wonder why we Boxsterites talk about it more than the various other registers? How long before the Cayman register starts, I wonder?![:D]

russtbird,

For a long time the Cayman was known as the "Boxster Coupe". As it is based on the current Boxster this makes sense ;)
Indeed the club were probably going to just incorporate "Coupe" owners in to the Boxster Register, however the new model name throws this open to second thoughts.

I imagine Robin Walker will be taking details of potential register secretaries in the next few months before launch, if anyone is considering it...

Certainly makes sense Mark. I see that the 'modern' register actually already recognises the Cayman, but I imagine that once a few Club members take ownership of their new coupes they are bound to want their own register.

Given that there are separate registers for 993 / 996 etc, it would seem strange NOT to have a seperate register for the Cayman. We know it is based on the current Boxster, but given that Porsche themselves have distinguished it both in name and price from the Boxster, it would seem better to have its own register. Just my 2 penneth worth.....

Guys,

I spoke with Robin W over the weekend and he confirmed there will Cayman register and he had a well known and loved member in mind for RS - but I will say no more so he can announce in the correct way.
I have already set up the model and register details on the Club system ready for the first enrolments

That does not mean we need have a seperate Cayman forum thread, so I propose to keep this within the Boxster thread till demand justifies its own one.

You made the comment that the Cayman is being discussed mostly on the Boxster part of the forum.
This makes me wonder if Porsch e do in fact have their marketing right.
Some have been worried that 911 owners will downgrade (at least in terms of price) to the Cayman. Porsche claim that it fills a different market niche.
Perhaps the lack of comments shows this to be true.
