No Engine Power above 3000 RPM

Happy New Year to All.

Aug 2005 987 S, 17k on the clock with no mods.

I have had a problem 3 or 4 times now with oil getting into the air sensor on the engine which results in the engine failing to rev above about 3000 RPM, thus no power and somewhat dangerous in an overtaking manoeuver!

My OPC (not official here in Guernsey, only have an official one in Jersey) has cleaned the sensor three or four times which helps but I don't think cures the underlying issue.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem where the oil level drops, the engine smells a bit of overheating from the side vents and the result is a dirty sensor and power loss at higher RPMs?

Many thanks for any thoughts as this is getting a little tiresome now!

This sounds serious .... have you noticed any smoke from the exhaust at all or any oil in the radiator expansion tank?

Hi Nick, thanks for responding.

Not once the engine is up to temp, but on start there is some blue smoke which soon clears.

Can't check the radiator expansion tank right now as the car is with the OPC for a fix.

Why do u state that this issue sounds serious, any particular reason; as to me it's been serious for three or four occasions, with still no permanent fix.

Thanks.

The issue may be more than this, but I have seen a few needing replacement MAF's (Mass Airflow sensor), as they just get 'sticky' (really technical term, I know!) after a while. BMW's are much worse however ;)

If you indeed have a lot of oil blowing through, as Nick suggested, get them to check the radiator expansion to confirm. If so, it could be a number of things

The smoke on startup is quite normal with the flat 6, particularly if it has stood for a couple of days.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your suggestions, I will ask about the radiator expansion when I get the OPC report.

I was considering calling Porsche Customer Service and asking if this was a known issue, as according to my OPC they have not had a similar fault develop on any other Boxster over here.

Just getting a little bit fed up with stock replies that don't seem to cure the problem long term, at least it still has a Porsche warranty!

Thanks.

Whats the connection between oil in the coolant and oil on the Maff?

Hi,

I have now had an update from my OPC, it seems that piston number 6 has finally failed and that I am going to need a replacement engine.

I have had 3 or 4 similar cases of the lack of power over the last year, which has always been put down to either the MAF or the O2 filters. It now seems that the piston has failed enough for the OPC to finally identify (with the help of Porsche tech) what the real problem is.

All I can say is I am very very glad I have continued with my extended warranty on this Aug 05 car, the engine plus labour will be around STG 8-9,000.

A final point if anyone has the answer, does the engine carry its own independent warranty such that if the currently extended warranty which expires in December was not renewed the engine itself would still be covered for a further period up to two years from the date of its replacement?

Thanks.
