Had to happen to me on a lovely sunny day!.
Parked up at a petrol station yesterday and set the car in park in the normal fashion. As I took my foot off the brake the car seemed to roll back a little which I thought was unusual. It was only after refuelling and trying to start I found myself with a very free moving gear lever and no gears - the car had put itself into reverse! The "roll back" must have been because it was still in gear.
Fortunately the transmission wasn't locked and it's a light car so with a little help I could push it out of the way to safety but no amount of cajoling would give me a gear, the computer telling me to find P or N.
Anyway, after hanging around for a while the RAC came and did a good job arranging a pick up for the car, which is now sitting at the Glasgow OPC.
Story over, it's question time - is this a common occurrence?
And the $64000 dollar question - does anyone know what the problem is, and is it likely to be difficult (i.e. expensive) to fix?
Does anyone know where I can find an exploded diagram of the setup - just out of curiosity I'd like to find out how it works.
My own thoughts are that it should be something simple like a broken coupling or linkage but I just don't know.
I look forward to reading your responses.
