No oil pressure

Hi Guys and Girls,
Looking for a lttle tech support here. Started the 84 944 this morning after being away for 4 weeks only to find I have no oil pressure. Usually have oil pressure around 3.5 when hot and 5 when cold so a little puzzled about this as no unusal noise last time out and ran fine. I have run the engine for a few minutes only and the rattle from the top end after start up is not disappearing. Usually once oil pumping it goes nice and quite. Not doing so now so suspect pump has failed. Any suggestions on possible cause or repair would be appreciated as was going to Le Mans in it next week. Doh, looks like the Jeep might have to go instead.[:'(]
Regards, Roger the dodge.

Bottom crankshaft pulley bolt (or somesuch) also drives the oil pump. Check that it is really (really) ((REALLY)) tight.

Someone will be along soon with a better explanation. Or do a search.

Other culprits include the oil pickup pipe fracturing or all the oil having been stolen by fairies.

Or your gauge has broken.

Oli.

when did you last change the oil and filter ? if the oil is not reaching the top end it could be a blockage. Silicon type gaskets are a common culpret for oil feed blockages.
I think the Clarkes garage has a schematic showing the complete oil system which might help you pin point where the problem might be
I would do an oil and filter change using a cheap thin oil ,maybe even mix in some flushing oil and then check the old oil for contaminants. Once the problem is sorted you can change the oil for a better quality.

Oil and filter changed out today after the problem occured. Just wondering if the oil pick up has fallen off. Been spinning the engine with plugs out, no sign of a pressure rise at all. Anybody know if its possible to get the 944 sump off with removing the engine??? Oh well could be in the Passat for Le Mans.

did you remove the bypass valve and oil pressure sender and check for blockage ?

If you can get hold of a boroscope you can stick it up the sump drain plug hole and look inside your sump. You can hire them or borrow one from a building Surveyor or cavity wall company. Try a google your area.

If you can attach a brass fitting somewhere you could use an air line to back pressurize your oil system .Might clear a blockage.

Well looks like it's an engine out job. It will have to wait for a week or two though as Le Mans is looming fast. I'll keep you posted on the findings, thanks for the support.

Ha, well happy bunny now, messed around this morning with the oil presure relief valve and hey presto running sweet as anything. All being well should be in Le Mans Thursday morning.

Cheers, Roger944.

OH YES, definitely going in the 944 to Le Mans. Been out today and running like nothing had happen. It must have known I had been looking to part exchange it for a 944 S2 or Turbo (no aircon you see in the early 944).

So I will be there in the PCGB enclosure from Thursday morning, overnight ferry from Portsmouth.

See you there.
Regards to all, Roger.

We're catching the 8am Portsmouth-Cherbourg fast Ferry on Thursday morning, so see you sometime Thursday afternoon[:)]

Watch out for 'Les Rozzers' and their cunning speedtraps on the way down....[8|][:D]

Safe trip

Just to update on the oil pressure. Got down to and back from Le Mans with out any issues. Car is now running better, the 600 mile trip did it good. Nice to meet some more 944 owners down there.

Nick, hope you got home OK - last seen at warp speed up the M3.......

Regards to all, Roger.

Roger good to meet you too!

I thought I was being quite restrained with the right foot [:D], but after taking it so gently in La belle France due to the huge numbers of Les Rozzers hiding behind hedges with speed guns etc, I think the opportunity to 'make progress' was too much to resist!

Loved your car on those wide Fuchs - sounded nice too.

Will post some pics up, when i get a minute..
