NO REAR ANTI ROLL BAR?!?!

Guest

Hi, I have owned my 1977 2.7 targa for 6 or so years and its just come to my attention via Parr that there is no rear anti roll bar fitted to my car. Ive had a look underneath and i can quite clearly see all the mounting points but no evidence of an anti roll bar ever being present. Fortunately (or not) the MOT tester has never noticed. So i have 3 questions. 1), Should it have one fitted?,2) Where can i get a complete roll bar and fittings from? 3) Is it a easy DIY job or should it be fitted by a pro? Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Cheers Alex

Hi Alex,
Sorry for the slow reply.
I am a bit confused by your post so can I ask a question.
Are you saying that your targa does not have a targa bar? i.e. your car is like a drop head? Or does your car have a targa bar and you would like to fit a roll bar as well?
These questions must seem dumb but unless somebody like me who doesn't mind people laughing at him asks a question then it is likely that nobody else will join in.

He means the anti-roll bar - part of the suspension.

I've no idea whether the car should have but if all the mounting points are there it is a very simple bolt-on job. Might be able to get a second hand bar from someone who has upgraded.

Buy new bushes and drop links though.

Chris,
Thanks for that now I understand.
I have replaced my anti roll bar bushes front and back. The front is a little tricky as you need to align several parts to get the bolts in but doable on your own, also the roll bar has to be pushed well through one bush so that you can enter the bush on the other side, you will need lubrication on the roll bar to enable the roll bar to slide through the bush . Assembly of the rear bushes is much easier. I bought the bushes and bolt kits and drop links from Euro Car parts for about £90. I would try Euro Car parts for the anti roll bars as well.

Hi, my 74 Targa S had no body fixings for a rear roll bar to mount on but did have the spigots on the rear suspension trailing arms. If you have the body fixing brackets you're lucky. I did get the brackets welded on after fitting a 3 litre engine. The petrol pump on my car was fitted to where one of the brackets would normally be. Yours is later than mine so maybe the pump on your car is fitted behind the fuel tank.
I don't believe Porsche fitted the rear anti- roll bars to 2.7's, not even the S models.

Mike

Hi Chaps

Thanks for all your posts. I will try and lookout a new anti roll bar. Are their any ones that are a good upgrade from OE? Also forgot to mention my targa was originally a Sportomatic, i dont know if this makes a difference. Im still not convinced that Porsche fitted the anti roll bar originally.

Cheers
Alex

Do you need a rear ARB ?

If the car was originaly set up not to have one (Though this would seem strange on a rear engined car) then adding one could upset the balance of the car, without matching the spring rates & front ARB.
