No Service History! a Gamble?

Hello...
I Have been searching For a 924s or a 944..after many Weeks I have found one In Excellent Condition, both Inside and out!...the oil pressure Perfect All electrics work...the Only Problem is that it has no service History!(Apparently Lost?)...it has 14 Tax discs..which are still in the tax disc holder behind the current one..which proves the car has been on the road for the last 14year at least!...The car has been up for sale a few months but no one has been to view when they hear the No history bit...now, the seller has reduced it to £1800! a thousand less than his original price...the Tax runs out this week...the Mot Nov...
is it worth a gamble?

It's always going to be a gamble because you don't know what regular service items are due so you need to be ready to pay out a few thousand within the first year. At this age you should always buy a car on it's current condition so ignore the mileage and the older service hstory. With no records you should budget for new belts, rollers and water pump straight away which will set you back circa £1000. You also need to change the coolant, gearbox oil and brake fluid.

I would say yes take a chance. If the bodywork is good with no filla or rust in the sills the engine sounds and runs well with nasty noises and good oil pressure and the interior is in good nick 1800 is a steal. I had a 944S2 with £8000 worth of receipts a couple of years ago. Itcost me £1000 in parts in the first 6 months!

My 86 Lux had a replacement engine and no history whatsever but I drove it as a daily driver for 9 years 72,000 miles ! with no major work needed

As others say its a risk. With a car that old history counts for little imo there is so much that could still go wrong with a car of that age .

Allow £1000 for water pump belts tensioners and a few odd bits as Paul says and you'll have a very nice classic for £2,800 which is basically just a few weeks wages how can you go wrong?

I'd want to see recent history and in the absence of that I think it is a gamble. Offer him £1,500 for it if your gut feel is that it is a good one.

Yeah I know the one I have been looking as well looks nice but for the money it is an attractive offer but hmmmm

It wasn't In an advert But at the Side of the Road....(In Nottingham, I can Give you the Number if inteested!)
The chap Refused to Budge from the asking Price....I enquired about Belts Water Pump ETC...£663( At a Porsche speacilist in Nottingham..Zentrum)...I informed the seller he said...Yeah?...So I declined to Buy it!
But I did Find a Red One (I didn't Want Red!)Full Service history and Mot's Receipts with Belts Changed...I very good Order For £2k 123K on clock Everything thing Works Original Tool Kit sunroof bag etc...an Ex member Of the PCGB club too!...
Anyways I Bought it and Pick it up Monday!...
Thanks for all your Help!

Blimey, another 944 guitarist. It truly must be the musical vehicle of choice for every discerning string twanger.

We will hound you until the pics materialise [:D]

[&:] you don't want me and my strings.. I got fed up with trying to make any resonable sound from mine I found the most exciting part of the guitar was when the strings snapped when you tightened them too much...[:D][:D] then I did a very rock and roll thing with it and it neatly fitted in the green wheelie bin [&:]
