1999 MY Carrera 4 not starting.

Here's one for you all.... I took my car to have the front droplinks replaced this morning. Car started first time. Drove to garage. Engineer started car and drove onto ramps but stalled the car. Droplinks done. Went to reverse it out and the car wouldn't start. Turns over fine. Put the computer on which indicated no faults. Disconnected battery to do a 'hard reset'. Reconnected. Exactly the same. The computer then showed that the immobiliser was 'active' but....

Anyway - the car has been left at the garage but any suggestions / solutions would be most gratefully received.

Thank you in anticipation.

Colin

If fuel is ok and battery is in good condition -
DME? I am not sure if it can can be reset without affecting internal codes. You may need to wait until someone on the forum clarifies fault.

The immobiliser inhibits cranking, ignition, and fuel pump, so I don't think that is the problem. If the fuel pump runs (does it?) then looking for a spark might be the next stage. Does it fire at all? Or is it firing occasionally but doesn't catch. Crank position sensor? (If not firing at all).

Sounds similar to a long standing problem I had with the rear fuel vent valve - if it starts ok from cold tomorrow, you might want to check it out.

Hi Colin
This probably sounds really obvious & im no mechanic but I wouldn't have thought stalling the engine would effect anything, so from what you say in your thread would it be something straightforward like the mechanic disconnecting something to do the work and not re-connecting afterwards ( I'm sure the diagnostic check would have shown an error code or maybe not )
just a thought, hope you get it sorted
cheers steve

I would say he didn't stall it, more the engine cut, I woukd check the fuel pump if they haven't already but I am sure that's pretty obvious. I had one go the engine cut out straight away, no warning.

good luck it woukd be interesting to see how you get on.

cheers Phil

Hi again Philippe - the way you described that stall is also characteristic of the problem I had with the rear (engine compartment) vent valve, particularly when starting up when the engine was warm and moving a short distance slowly like out of a parking space (or onto a ramp!). Could be the devils own job to restart with gas pedal flat on the floor to get the pressure up.
This earlier thread might help you:
