Noice from air conditioning control unit

It never happened before, but now I hear pretty anoying noice from the air conditioning control unit which stays even after ignition is switched off.
I know that there is a little fan on the rear wall of the unit, so I assume that this fan produce the noice. Does anyone know what could happen? Like I said, before, I never actually heard this noice. How can I get rid of it?

Maurice, so if I understand you correctly, the noice means that the fan's bearings are gone... I never before tried to remove the CCU. Any special instruments needed? Any advice where to buy the fan and what could be the price?

Thanks a lot in advance

The CCU is removed like a car radio. Push 4 wires (about 3mm dia) in the holes on the front of the unit to release the CCU from the frame. There is a long plug on the back of the unit with all the connections, which you have to remove, and the unit will slide out the front of the dash, but it is tight against the steering column as I recall. The fan is screwed to the back, and has a plug to disconnect it from the back of the unit. Although this plug is polarised, it is fairly easy to get it back in the wrong way round. The part number of the fan is 964.659.148.00 and is about £100 from your friendly OPC.

Thank you Richard,
Seams like this operation should not take too much time if you have all necessary tools, maybe I will just ask my OPC to change the fan

As you've described it the noise may not be coming from the CCU fan but from the main fan in the engine bay running on. Mine did this a few years ago and was diagnosed by an OPC as requiring a replacement sensor in the fan unit. They also said that it would be worthwhile replacing the associated resistor at the same time, as in their experience it usually went in simpathy. Or maybe the resistor was knackered and the sensor usually went as well, my memories not what it was. There was also some associated clicking noises from the fan unit after the ignition was off but not all the time.

The part numbers are 964.616.550.02 (resistor) and 964.659.120.00 (sensor) and are easy enough to fit. But if you're going to take it into the OPC anyway just get them to confirm the problem before they replace the fan in the CCU for nothing.

By the way, does any one know how to get the CCU out in a LHD? It seems to jam on the cruise control stalk when I tried.

Thank you Clyde.
I still feel it more like a blower sensor noice, because I can hear it after key is out and the sound is changing when I close the vent hole in CCU. As far as I know the main fan does not run after ignition is off. I have already made an appointment for the next week, so will see what will be the diagnosis.
