At low speed ie: in traffic pulling away under load in 1st gear from almost stop, with clutch out, there is a sort of chatter/grumble noise. Am i paranoid ??? Help.

Common G50 noise. Take a look at the pelican and rennlist forums. A lot of people complain about this, but it doesn't seem to be a problem, just irritating. Mine is the same.

Presumably worse once the gear oil is warmed up? I can make mine do it in 1st, 2nd & 3rd if I try!Despite this changes are smooth & without fuss. Gear chatter in the G50 I'm told, complete rebuild is not guaranteed to erradicate this either,....... apparently!. Don't know if anyone has oil preference to overcome or minimise this?

This noise is fitted as std to many G50 boxes.

The most common suggestion is that one of the layshafts in the gearbox is torsionally winding up, and in doing so allowing the gears to chatter. Another one is that the coffee grinding sound is the result of the limited slip diff (if fitted). The box as fitted to the 2WD version of of the 964 has also been known to make this noise so I wouldn't worry unduly.

Regarding oil for the G50, I have used Swepco 201 in mine for the last couple of years, and it really does improve the shifting - especially from cold.

Its normal that it chatters mechanically when pulling off in first or indeed low revs in second. Also, when you depress the clutch and let it out again in neutral you can hear it click (nicley!) I've had 2 x 3.2' G50's.

Often miss those charming and reassuring sounds when in my 964 turbo - that's progress for you!

Porsche at some time used a rubber centred clutch disc to reduce the chatter noise. Most mechanics replace this disc with a solid disc as the rubber one can break down and just render the car without any drive.
