Noise CD Drive on PCM

My new C4S Cab (MY2004) has PCM2 fitted and it seems to me that the CD drive in the top of the unit is making a worrying noise.

At first I thought the noise was coming from the AC vent directly the above the PCM as the noise sounds like a duff fan or something in the vent, a kind of fast ticking noise. However, the noise stops after a short while. I removed my hardtop this weekend in preperation for some audio work to be carried out this coming week and on opening the door to get in with the soft top down the noise started as I climbed in. No engine running or key in ignition so that ruled out the fan. After it stopped I ejected the Nav disc and the noise started up again and continued without the disk being in place. It again stopped, I inserted the disc and once again it ticked away for about 15 seconds and stopped.

Anyone else had this. All seems ok in the operation of the PCM (apart from the fact the disc looks like the entire cast of Holiday on Ice had been practicing on the disc!).

what the hell is a PCM2 ?
why would anyone want a `personal contamination monitor' in their car anyway lol[:D]

it sounds as though it is constantly seeking like a Sky b+ hard disk drive does. Clicking and buzzing away. I suppose its possible the heads may have been damaged by shock ?ie pot holes etc. It shouldn't scratch the disks in normal operation. If its in warrantee I would advise taking it back. How come its on when the ignition is off anyway ? potential battery drain I should have thought.

1. Try copying the disk (if your computer drive can read it). If the disk is badly scratched the unit will try 'seeking' as Peanut suggested and will be very noisy.
2.Try using a Cd lens cleaner. If the lens is dirty as well as the disk being scratched it wont be able to read the disk, as the error correction system will be overloaded.

Really glad to hear that you have resolved the problem as your PCM unit will not be covered by warranty as your car is now over 2 years old. (Neither was my CD player at just over 2 years old....extended warranty covers neither). I seem to recall another thread quoting £900 for a refurbished PCM unit. If your sat nav disc can be copied this easily, does that mean when any up to date mapping discs may (or may not) become available for PCM2, that someone willing to flount copy right laws etc could just copy them instead of paying £350 (or whatever price Porsche will charge as you can't get them from Nav Teq direct). Assuming someone willing to pay buys a set in the first place and then lends them to you???? or sells cheap copies on EBay. I can't believe Porsche or Nav Teq would have designed such a system.

I am not that sure that the copy works totally as I haven't been anywhere in the car to confirm all the navigation is working as it should. However, the cursor function should only work when the nav disc is installed and mine does when the copy disc is inserted. I was surprised to be able to copy the disc I must admit!

The original does work (albeit with this annoying ticking every time it was accessed) and so I carry it in the glove box as back up.

Rintoul, it's even easier than you suggest. The files, I'm told, are all available online anyway as downloads on file sharing sites.
