Noise from engine when cold

I am a new owner of a 964 1993 model Porsche and I am a little concerned at the noise I hear from the engine when first started. I hear a noise from the drives side like fluid rushing around, it stops after about 60 seconds and only does it when the engine is very cold (1st thing in the morning). Does anyone have any deas what it might be? The oil pressure seems OK?

Chris,

Don't worry about it - it's perfectly normal. What you are hearing is the oil system. With the engine being dry sumped, the oil pump draws it's supply from the tank and pushes the oil through the engine and back to the tank via the filter. When the cars stands for any amount of time the small amount of residure oil in the engine drains into the bottom of the engine. As soon as the car is started, the oil system fills up again under pressure from the pump - and that's what you hear. Once the system is full the noise stops.

Enjoy the 964 - there's nothing better.

Regards

Dave

Isn't it wonderful?? Like a witches cauldron bubbling behind your ears.

You ought to try it in a car with no carpets or sound deadening.........I did today, for the first time for six weeks -wunnerful!![:D]

I collected my 993 yesterday after having a lot of work done (engine out job). This morning I heard the fluid-rushing noise for the first time ever. I was rather worried that they'd messed something up putting the engine back in so made straight for the forums and found this thread.
Very reassuring, but strange I never heard it before? (it's pretty loud, definately not there/as loud before).

Cheers

Actually, I think few people realise what a huge part a car's engine/exhaust note plays in giving the car it's character. My 944 S2 has been transformed with the fitment of an ESS exhaust. Mind you, my 964 has a bog standard system and it sounds just fantastic.
