Noise from Gearbox....

Noticed on way home today a slight noise from the gearbox when driving. Its not a whine more the noise of all, I guess the gears moving. Clutch down and the noise stops..........Still reasonably new to 944's so finding new things about them every day !. Anyone know if this is a "feature" of 944's......I suspect not in which case if it gets worse is a gearbox rebuild out the question or better to source a recon or replacement one.

Such a fun car to drive, a small thing like a noisey gearbox wont put me off.....

My gearbox has several different noises. It whines nicely, I like to think of it as the sound of a straight-cut sequential Touring Car sort of noise rather than anything worse....[&:]

It also has a distinct "this bearing is on it's way out" sound, that stops when the clutch is pushed in.

All three specialists who've worked on the car have failed to mention a problem, so I'm not overly worried about it, but that is over 15k miles. If your's has suddenly started to make a new noise then I'd get it looked at for your own peace of mind!

its very common for the gearbox to whine, they are derived from the Audi 80 unit, which suffers from the same problem- my (new) 944 box makes a slight noise, and my Audi 80 coupe box has whined for the last 20k miles....

put some good quality oil in the box, and don't worry too much

Sound advice - my gearbox oil was changed and it was transformed into a silent dream. But, only for about 1k.

Lots of people have had good results with Swepco, available from Bert Gear, the 944 Technical Advisor.

At least it'll seem whisper quiet when you put it back in []

Come on, be serious. Stop pulling this nice guys leg - we all know that this is what volume controls on car radios were invented for.

Gemmerson - a few more DB on your favourite (audio) track, that's all you need to know. (In fact, if you get enough aftermarket ICE gubbins, it will cover some significantly more expensive sounds as well - gearboxes being lunched, camshafts being launched, big ends being, erm, big-ended. After all, that's why those Saxo and Nova boys install such hateful apparatus, isn't it?)

My 928 had an extra boot carpet and it never occured to me why until I took it out for a few days to dry it and the gearbox whine drove me nuts.
Get a spare boot carpet ,the one with a rubber backing it should quieten things down considerably including road noise
If you have a noise that dissapears when you put the clutch in then its likely to be a dry clutch release bearing . It will eventually need replacing when you do the clutch but mine ran like that for 6 years . When I finally replaced the clutch the thrust bearing had practically disintergrated into a pile of rusty dust in the bell housing.

I've just discovered some additive called Moly Slip- comes in a small tube, and it silenced my box instantly, also put the oil pressure up a bit....

The oil pressure in the engine up front is totally seperate to the gear oil in the gearbox at the back []

I completly agree...I'm normally more logical, but that needle seems to be climbing higher than it did before![]

Either way, that moly slip's good stuff!

I agree with the stereo idea or get a louder exhaust, mine has whined for around 35k now (3 years) and I keep meaning to do something, but my OPC don't consider it worthwhile and a few mates of mine that have 944s recognise it from theirs, it's a character thing, so don't sweat it.
