On delivery of my Boxster the sales rep told me that the car would make a noise on full steering lock and told me it was nothing to worry about.

In fact, there is a note about this in the Driver's manual. On p155 it states "The flow noise heard at full lock is design-related and does not indicate a defect in the steering system."

Maybe this is what you are hearing. Or is it also on partial lock that it is happening?

If it feels like a jump or a hop it's normal. It's a function of steering geometry and the resulting angle the inside wheel tyre makes to the road on full lock. The inside wheel doesn't ever make a circle of a radius perfectly matched to that of the outside wheel and because the outside one grips better (it is more upright and has bigger grip patch) the inside will "jump" on some surfaces to relieve the mismatch. Whether it jumps or whether the tyres deflect to absorb the mismatch depends on surface, dry/wet/frozen etc.) and friction. It's the "jump" as the tyre hops slightly across the road that makes the noise. More noticeable when reversing.

Is it a whine or like a mechanical creek?

My '01 S is at the OPC I bought it from a month ago to have a mechanical creek sorted when manouvering slowley (ie Parking) However a friend has the same and it tends only to happen in the hot dry weather.

I'll let you know the outcome, may be of interest to you?

Our recent S 02 purchase also had a dry creaking noise from the front at slow speeds more so after breaking and when the temperature was warmer. It seamed to come from the n/s/f, found that rotating the n/s/f coil spring slightly by hand reproduced the noise. By luck the next day we had planned to have the front wheels rebalanced to cure a slight vibration. While the front wheels were off, PTFE lubricant spray was applied to the bottom of each coil spring seat and to the coil spring upper bush, again the springs were rotated a litte to allow the spray to work in.
Result, creak gone and the steering even feels a liitle lighter and more progressive even with 18's.

Now if someone could let me know how to lubricate the bell housing clutch piviot in situ, I could cure that final embassing hot temperature only squeak..........

Hi,

Back from the OPC and they simpley greased the steering thingy and the dry creek now gone! However, as with Mic I now have a dry, warm weather only creek/squeek from the clutch. This I have been told is the Clutc release bearing and it is going back to have that done under warranty on Tuesday.

Hope that helps?

Richard.

Thanks folks it would appear to be a 'normal' noise evident in hot dry weather. Thanks for your suggestions and the peace of mind!
