Noise on warm start-up 981S

I have experienced on start-up a couple of times. Please note that the noise starts a few seconds following start-up when the engine is warm and then stops after about 10 seconds. It has only happened a couple of times and is sporadic. There is no detriment to power and it stops after a very short period. Does anyone have any ideas what this may be.

Hi,

As above, but on my 987.2 CS the offside duct vents fan-assisted engine bay air, but I don’t know if that applies to your 981’s nearside vent instead, in which case that could be the source of the noise?🤔

Correct. Very occasionally the fan operates on my 987.2 CS in hot weather when I’ve parked-up after a drive … and it’s high volume and very noisy, so you can’t miss that it’s operating!😀

Thanks for that. I’ve attached an image of my engine but can’t see where the fans would be.IMG_8363.jpeg

Just thinking about it again, and looking at the image, it appears that unlike the 987 both ducts on your 981 are used for intake air, so unless engine bay air is vented elsewhere [if indeed it is!] unfortunately it seems as though you’ll have to look elsewhere for your noise source.☹️

The 981 has split engine and cooling air intakes on each side, see below. The fan (20) is on the forward branch.
As Jeff points out, engine bay cooling fans (they do suck in) typically only operate when the engine bay is hot, e.g. after a spirited drive. They will remain on after the engine is switched off.
On a 981 each side intake splits into engine air and engine bay cooling. On the 987, the left intake is for engine air, the right is for engine bay cooling.
