Noise Test

Hi all,

As I was passing Brands Hatch on Saturday, I popped in for a noise test as I am looking at booking up Trackdays for June, July, August and although aware that 98db days were out I wanted to check what my reading was. I have a decat and cup pipe with standard final box. I was shocked that my reading were 115db and 1111db.
Judging from the forum my mods are fairly common, so are these limits not enforced much on the day or is there some sneaky tick I am missing.
Really wanted to get the car on the track this year but it seems that it is now out of the question. The tester's exact words were, 'not a hope in hell mate' !!

Any advice would be welcome.

Regards

Graham

Wow! never seen a reading so high. [:D][:D]

[I assume you actually mean 111db of course, it is a worry. Lots of posts on exhaust addons to bring noise down. do a search or wait for Jamie Summers to post! ]

There was someone doing a tailpipe silencer that was designed for exactly this scenario but I can't for the life of me remember who was making them! Someone will have a better memory than me.....

I would suggest that your "standard" final box might not have anything in it as those sorts of levels are usually only seen on straight through race systems. My RS, with the same set up, reaches between 105 and 108 db, depending how closely the scrutineer is looking at the rev counter[;)]

Or you could simply move down here to Oz, where my question about noise limits at tracks was greeted with shreeks of laughter.

OK, Steve on the 964 register may have identified the issue. At Brands the scutineer had me hold it at 5,500 revs but it would appear that should have been 4,800. Is that the rev limit that you guys are checked at?

Tracks will check you at 2000rpm below red line or 75%. Doubt it will have made a huge difference to your results though...maybe 1 or 2 db.

MY RS with same set up as yours used to be 108-109db.

I had to replace the cup pipe with standard pipe and am now 104db-105db static and fine for drive past.

As Jason says, it should be 75% of max revs. (it is at Brands) This would be 3/4 x 6800, or 5,100 revs. Always put the clutch in when the noise man is in action as this will eradicate the noise in the drive train. Using the same exhaust configuration as you with a functioning final silencer gives me 107 dB. Adding a Will Norman silenced tip takes me down to 104 dB. Adding a main silencer in place of the cup pipe takes me to 99 dB with the standard tip or 97 dB with Will's tip.

I have bog standard 964RS exhaust system as it left the factory , usually get 101 on noise test if hold test revs just on 4500......if depress clutch and concentrate on just under / just on 4500 with hot engine get 99/100 db.

As I only have the 964RS for going to and participating in track days its a no-brainer to leave it unmodified !

Jamie Summers was in touch with Will and helped me get mine.

I have cat bypass, cup pipe, final silencer and wills tip --- 103.5 at Oulton --- varies by 1dB according to the day, and have never had a problem with the 98dB drive by at Donnington.

Just looked at the dansk website in the above post. Looks to me that the insert shown is only for dansk's own sport tailpipe ! so if you buy the insert you got to buy the sport tailpipe to go with it ! It does not lok like it would fit the original silencer tail pipe . Looks very nicely made though[:)]

Can anyone put me in touch with Will Norman again please? I want one of those exhaust tips.

My car has the cup pipe and car bypass..... and runs at about 109db. Brands are ok, but Castle Coombe and Goodwood are a no go. I always have the first silencer fitted and this is a bit of a pain in the arse so would prefer to have a solution like Wills if it works.

Thanks to anyone who can put me in touch with Will again.

Cheers
