Noise when turning wheel!

Hi everyone
I have a 993 C4 Cab 1995 Variocam, and a loud squeeking noise comes from the front of the car each time I turn the wheel. There is also some black fluid leaking from the front. I took the car back to the dealer I bought it from (Portiacraft) a year ago and they advised me that I need a new steering rack on that side. Also is it ok just to replace the rack on one side only?

Does this seem right to you all? Cost about £400 for a reconditioned rack and about 2 hrs labour?
In the mean time they suggested I topped up the power steering fluid.

I bought some castrol automatic tq dextron 3 transmission fluid, is this the right one?

Is it safe to drive the car until I get it fixed as I am going on holiday with it to france, and there mechanic is away for two weeks.

Any help appreciated

Thanks for the advise Maurice

Yes apparently it is one of the first variocam!

Ok guess I bite the bullet and get it fixed asap
