Noisemeter

I just bought a noise meter. Should be received in the post in a few days. I am looking forward to seeing just how objectively noisy the cammed and sport muffled beasty really is.

I can lend it out to any interested parties for a very nominal fee once I receive it. While most meters are £100+, I found this for circa £20. Seems as accurate as anything up to the £100 price point, after which you get semi-pro meters with certification/calibration etc.

Well here are the results - picture tells a thousand words. Tested at 4500rpm at 1 metre and 45 degrees from the left tailpipe (ie in the middle of the car basically), twin outlets both uncapped.

So, there is a little noise reducing work to be done. I guessed 105db, so its more or less expected.

Still, here is one of my favourite car pictures, just to cheer me up - maybe I should start a new thread of "favourite pictures of your own car"?

The mobile phone I got given at work contains a noise meter, its a Nokia phone.
What will they think of next...
It has a compass and is also a thermometer, although the thermo always says 32C as the phone is always in my pocket...

Never heard of a phone with a noise meter. Sounds like a good toy, but you need something properly calibrated IMHO if you want to try exhaust options with a view to passing track noise tests.

I have been running my car with one exhaust outlet capped and got around to retesting it at the weekend. Unfortunately, it still reads 105.6db [:(] Kind of bizarre, because it sounds a fair bit quieter in the car. On the plus side, the annoying resonance is completely gone with one outlet capped. Good news for anyone in the market for an M&K 2-in 1-out muffler - very good quality and lightweight muffler IMHO.

Not that it's got a lot to with this thread but I've just had Tony Corlett's book posted out to me in Singapore, there's some great pics in there of a car that looks a lot like that one!!!!

Yes, pleasure to help with pics and some other bits and pieces content related.

Tony did a great job.

How did you cap the exhaust outlet? I've got a 2 outlet exhaust with a loud resonance between about 1800 and 2700 rpm that it would sometimes be good to quieten a little.
