Noises from clutch area..

This topic has already been here but it faded away..guess i didn't know exactly how to describe it..but it seems to be getting worse..so i've been keeping my eye/ear on the problem and i'll give it another go..

When switching gears the noise appears just before the clutch pedal gets all the way back up..the noise is worse if releasing the pedal faster..it sounds like something is loose..like a piece of metal banging another..sometimes i can't get into reverse..i press the clutch but the gear doesn't go all the way in..so i need to switch back to neutral, release the clutch, press it again and i'm in reverse(although i'm not sure if that's releated to this problem as i've heard that it's pretty common on 944's)..

Just a few more things i didn't mention before..the noise also appears when pressing clutch somewhere in middle or bottom..and the moment i switch off the engine..

Mmmm........sound a bit like what happened to my clutch, unfortunately to say, just before it went kaput !!. I still had the original clutch at 88K miles which has the rubber centre on the friction plate. That eventually tore and then stuck itself to the flywheel. Prior to it happening it would only go into gear with a few attemnpts and a terrible vibration coming through the gear stick to accompany my attempts to get a gear. ....Or it could also be the clutch master cylinder not allowing the clutch to release properly........dont want to sound all doom and gloom.

There's problems getting into forward gears..only reverse and even that doesn't happen too often..and i haven't noticed that there would be any excessive vibration from gear knob..

I just hope i'll get to the bottom of it before something happens..it's obvious that there's something seriously wrong as it sounds to me like something's gonna snap or fall off really soon..so at the moment i'm forced to drive like an old lady[&o]..it's really a shame i don't have a garage..can't do much under the sky..

Yikes []

Every time I've known I had a problem with a car and tried to baby it for a while it's bitten me in the bum because I have done some serious damage to it which ended up costing a lot more money than just fixing it in the first place.

Good luck

Is there any bearings in the front of torque tube/in clutch that could be causing the noise? The more i think of it the more it sounds like worn bearings..can't be the tube bearings cause i had the tube changed but the noise is still there..[8|]

hi joe, mate this may sound a bit obvious but are you sure the clutch is fully dis engaging you may be finding that you have a little clutch drag making selecting gears difficult and noisy, can you discribe the noise a bit further please

It sounds like there's a gap between something..if pressing or releasing clutch..it goes goes and then suddenly there's that bang..i have also noticed the banging while actually switching gears..there seems to be like too much free play..its even making a bit too much noise if i get into gear or just move the gear knob left-right when the engine is not running..and if the engine is running on neutral it sometimes feels like something is rubbing something else..that's why i thougt that it was the torque tube in the beginning..i know it sounds complicated..but i'm doing my best to describe it..[8|]

it`s difficult to try and diagnose the problem without listening to it, is the noise comnig from the clutch end or the gearbox end?

It's certainly coming from the front..so from the clutch end then..funny thing is that i've asked from quite a few garages to diagnose the problem but no one has been able to do it so far just by hearing..in fact the guy did timing belts told me to wait til it gets worse..that really sounds like a good advice from a bloke who will never work on my car again..

sounds like your clutch is trying to make a break for it in my opinion, but i would give this guy a ring at oak tree garage on 01395 568498 he`s an oracle when it comes to porsches and he loves to talk he`s a little ettcentric and a bit posh but helped me out with my troubles, ps be prepared to listen......let us know how you get on!!!!!!!
