Noisey Air con

On my 2001 2.7 986 the air con has become noisey with a bearing whine similar to a failing alternator or water pump. The pitch varies with engine speed rather than with - for example - the blower speed. The noise seems to be coming from the front of the car.

Does anyone have any cheap ideas to fix it or checks to confirm the source?

Don't know if this helps, but I just cured a similar problem on my BMW by having the system re-charged at KwikFit for £45!. Before fixing, the whining went away if I turned off the air-con. Could be the same problem. Good luck

A couple of things. There are no moving aircon parts in the front (well, there is the ventilation blower in the dash) but I don't suppose you mean that, the compressor is in the back mounted on top/side of the engine.
Secondly, I wouldn't use Kwik fit as I'm pretty sure all they do is plug in a can of aerosol refrigerant. Problem with that is if you have any moisture in the system the stuff they put in will potentially cause a blockage in the system (I was told of one guy who had to get a new, ah the part name escapes me, the bit where the liquid goes through the tiny hole becoming a gas a causing the temperature drop). Nothing against Kwikfit per se, getting my MOT at the local place at two.
Might be worth saying where you are in the country and get a rec for an aircon specialist. A visit/pressure test/suction/refill is usually only around £50, and if you get someome good they'll let you know if your system is functional before refilling it.

I've got the same issues on my 2000 986s. I've had both condensers replaced and a number of the seals done following the condensers and now my aircon is making this noise.

Its in for a service soon so will ask the indie to have a look then.

Hi
I've just ha both compressors replaced by George McMillan in Northern Ireland and he told be about this noise. I can't remember exactly what causes it but it has something to do with a small pump that runs from the engine and, i think, powers the air con unit. The bearing can run dry, especially if it hasn't been used for a while like mine. You could contact George through R27 contacts and he could explain properly. I don't think using it will cause any more damage but it is really annoying!

Cheers

Geoff
