Noisy boxster hard-top

My 986 Boxster S has a hard-top that makes a hell of a racket. It squeaks and creaks like you'd not believe, right above the drivers (ie my) head. Has anyone got any tips about how to resolve this? What about putting vaseline on the the rubber seals?

Any other ways to sort this out?

Where the hardtop fits into the windshield header there are 2 plastic caps. They like to pop off. If one or both are missing you will get noise.

Thanks, that's very useful. When I get home I'll check. It sounds plausible as it only happens on one side - which I'm guessing might be missing. I'm not sure I can tell from the picture exactly where you mean, but I'm sure when I actually look at the thing for real it'll be obvious.

I've had very conflicting advice about using a lubricant. Some say do, some say don't. I might try a silicone lubricant if I can't see this bit missing.

The previous explanation is likely.
This is the lug on the hardtop that fits into the recess on the widscreen surround, covering the lug is a rubber plug that fits over the lug and the whole lot pushes into the recess.
Hardtops tend to rattle and creak:-

The sunvisors flip up and touch a rubber buffer fitted to the hardtop - these create a rattle - i used a self adhesive felt pad stuck onto the sunvisor so it acts as a buffer between visor and buffer.
Lubricate with spray silicon the rubber seal, hardtop to top screen support
Lubricate with silicon the door windows rubber
Lubricate with silicon the rear seal below rear window befor fitting the top
I also silicon spray all the plastic joints on the hardtop interior plastic as these creak and rattle, however its a bit messy and you have to wipe everything down to clear the excess - but if you want a quiet ride you need to do it, I do mine before fitting in the winter and only do it the once - everything stays quiet
The silicon is a spray lubricant not silicon sealer

this should quieten things down a bit and prevent the creaks

Tool Pants is right, there's a plastic cap missing from the side that is making the noise, so tomorrow I'll be on the phone to my local PC for a tiny piece of plastic... anyone want to hazard a guess at what that'll cost me!

THANK YOU TOOL PANTS!

I've just botched a fix with a piece of rubbery-plastic that was more or less the same shape as the cap and it has completely solved the hugely annoying squeak/creaking. I cannot believe what a massive difference such a simple and small component makes. It's the car I bought again! I took it to refill at the petrol station and didn't hear a squeak out of it... although it's the first time I've had it really empty of fuel and it just set me back £64.42 for a tank of Optimax so I was nearly squeaking myself!

Thank you to everyone who suggested a solution.

Call me old fashioned, but it's parked on the road and I like it to still be there every morning! And as I'm quite able to lift the roof off on my own I tend to use it year-round rather than run the risk of it being vandalised/stolen. And I'm not someone who insists on having the roof off for the sake of it even when it's freezing cold or raining, or both. Although, if I had a garage I'd probably leave the hardtop off and/or have the roof down more often. But a garage around here costs about the same as a Carerra GT, so I can forget that! Am I excused?

Don't take it to heart - hardtops seem to invoke the same emotions in people as Marmite. [:)]

FYI: The little plastic cap was only £1 from my local Porsche Centre. Best pound I'll ever spend there!

There was a spate of hardtop thefts a few years ago - make sure all the spinlocks and clamps are fully i place and as tight as you can get them - i don;t balme you for leaving it on for street parking, and storage can be a real pain - both reasons i don't have a hardtop with the 987.
