Noisy Cat / Exhaust?

Morning all

I have a terrible 'stones in a can' type noise from the drivers side exhaust area - it's not the cat heat shield, thats on firmly, and nothing else is obviously lose to my untrained eye, but paticularly when cold, or at low revs/low gear/low speed I have this terrible rattling noise. Could it be inside the catalytic converter? Any other likely causes?
Appreciate any insight anyone may have before I take a trip to the garage.

thanks

John

John, it could be the rear trailing arms. A common fault I am told. Parts are very expensive but the labour cost is relatively reasonable.

Try the Lambda sensors. They screw in like spark plugs and rattle like the devil when they come loose. They only seem to rattle when cold. Judging by recent posts there seems to be a spate! Early Boxsters have 1 each side, I think upstream of the cat. My MY2003 has 2 each side, one upstream and one downstream of the cat. Assuming you can get under the back end of your car or elevate it on ramps, easy to locate as they have a strong electrical cable going to each. Just check tightness with adjustable spanner. Both of my downstream ones came loose within 3 weeks of each other. The second one whilst at the Porsche Centre - the chaps were amazed by my 10 second diagnosis of the awful rattle, they stuck it on a lift and tightened the little devil up for me.

Thanks everyone. I wil certainly try to check the Lambda sensors today , failing all that I have the car booked in for a check at my local specialist on Saturday, so I'll report back.

cheers
John

Just had a look - good news is the Lambda Sensors are in tight - and I think I've found the cause of the rattle now. Just around the pipe that the Lambda sensor is screwed into is another heat shield type thing, but much more wrapped round the pipe than the bigger one I've had problems with before that's over the Cat itself.
This shield is loose, wheras the one on the other side of the car doesn't budge when you try to move it. Could anyone advise on how to tighten this one? Icouldn't see an obvious screw/connector to tighten/replace?

Thanks!

All sorted! It was the sheild around the pipe - removed it in the end and now I'm rattle free!!!

Gold star for me........

Had the same problem recently, just make sure you keep the perishable foods in the front storage compartment!
