Noisy gearbox

Having never owned or been in a 944 before getting mine, I wouldn't know if things are normal or not but my gearbox sounds a bit off. Its most noticeable on the over run and in all gears. it has this mid tone roar, a bit like a distant jet plane. Its really hard to explain. It reminds me of the diff in my dads mk 2 escort van. As its in all gears, I would say diff, but hey, what do I know!!!. Looking through the service records and receipts, it seems to have had a lot of gear oil bought over the years which makes me suspect its bothered other previous owners. It is also a bit snatchy when changing while cold. Not worried if it is a knackered box as I'll just change it, but if its one of those 944 traits, I'll happily live with it.

They all do that. I even have a copy of a 25yr old letter from PCGB telling a punter that the noise is normal.

Cool. I don't mind it at all but thought of dynamatting the back end out to quieten it down a bit, turning the radio up also helps.

It isn't correct to say that they all do it, but many do and Ive seen new cars which howl like banshees.

Soundproofing may work. The difference between rear seat squab in and out can be substantial (I always leave the squab in, even in a stripped competition car), so a little careful fitting could make a worthwhile improvement.

Now I'm not really one for snake oil... But... After hearing reports on how wonderful "Swepco" is, I tried it, and I must admit it made a huge difference to one of my turbos... Expensive, but could be worth a try.

Never tried swepco but any fresh gear oil could be an improvement if the current stuff has been in for years

They (almost) all do that, sir. Search on here for 'noisy gearbox' and you'll get lots and lots of hits.

Yeah, exactly this. Swepco started off as an industrial lubricant and then started to be used for military tank gearboxes. It's very, very expensive and while some people swear by it, any fresh oil to replace the existing stuff will make a big difference. I've never seen anyone compare fresh Swepco with fresh regular (synth) gear oil, but I doubt the difference would be worth the price differential.

Oli.

when I got my S2 3 years ago it had DONE 169k miles and a noisy gearbox , fresh oil and a dose of Molyslip transmission treatment worked wonders and is still quiet compared to what it was like.

Don't use molyslip if you have an LSD as you will render it useless! Won't do any harm in an non LSD box though.
